wait a minute—suddenly she’s tumbling out of bed as she realizes that its 7:20, and she. has. work. how could she not wake up on time?! she’s never late, up every morning no later than 6:15, so why on today of all days—keys, keys... where’s. my. oh thank god—out the door, she’s already seven minutes behind schedule but if she rushes she can still make it.

unfortunately, as she stands on an empty subway platform, she has to admit defeat. pulling out her phone, she intends to let her boss know she’ll be late when she sees something that drains all the color from her face. 7:02. it’s the end of daylights savings. perfect.

absolutely miserable, she knows there’s no point in going home now. so instead she moves towards a bench, phone in one hand while the other attempts to comb through her hair. normally a source of pride, its brilliant color seems to fall flat from its unkempt appearance, though honestly thats the least of her worries. in the end, amidst the annoyance, sleep-deprivation, and defeat, all she can do is wait.

staring blankly at her phone, she can practically feel the eyes on her when she hears a child call out,” look, mommy!” great, just what she needs, some rude comment from a—“she’s so beautiful! do you think she’s a princess?” her heart, midway through its plummet, skips a beat. for a moment everything freezes until a huge grin emerges on her face; looking up, she makes eye contact with the little boy in question and, with a finger covering her lips, winks, as if sharing some big secret.
