He pressed his back against the bricks of the ally, a chill creeping down his spine.
He could hear their footsteps getting closer, closer, then he took off around the
corner. He ran until his lungs burned, but no matter how hard he pushed himself
he knew he could never outrun the Assassins Guild. He skidded around a corner,
trying to maintain his balance, when suddenly a familiar hand pulled him down
a side street so small only a bicycle could have passed through. "Remy!" His brother looked
him up and down and shook him "What do you think you're doing running off alone?!"
Gambit looked down, he couldn't bare telling Julian that he had let him and the entire
Thieves Guild down. "I-I couldn't do it, I had her cornered but I just, couldn't"
Gambit shouted, unable to hold back the anger he felt at himself. He could feel his brother's eyes on
him, looked up,and was shocked to see his brother pull the long purple feather and it's chain of purple
beads out of his shaggy mane. "Take this, and get out Remy. Get out while you still can." His brother
pushed the feather and beads into his palm and took a slow step back. "No!"
Gambit shouted at him "I'm not leaving you here!" His brother was the only
family he had left, there was no way he could leave him here to continue the endless war between
the Thieves and the Assassins while he escaped to a normal life. Julian looked at him and smiled sadly
"Is this really what you want with your life Gambit? It's okay for now but what about in five years,
or ten? Please Gambit, my brother, get out of here while you still have a chance at life." Gambit
opened his mouth to argue when they both heard approaching footsteps, "The Assassins"
he spat. Julian looked at him and gripped his fore arm, nodding once before bolting onto the main road.
Gambit watched his brother run for his life until the sound of footsteps on concrete was only a memory
and, with a heavy heart, walked away. Away from the endless war between two guilds that had been
going on longer then anyone cared to remember. Away from the only home he had ever known.
Away from his brother.
Gambit looked at the sleek feather now woven into the fur of his tail and remembered his brother's
last words to him. The feather was the first thing they had stolen. It was from the leader of the
Assassin's Guild herself, and had secured them both a home when they had no where else to go.
Julian had kept it as a trophy ever since, assured that it was his because he was the elder of the
two, then young, brothers. "I swear to you Julian, I will do something good with
my life." He continued walking, to where, he had no idea, but he knew it would be
where his new life began.
