Thank you to everyone for your patience! I really had my work cut out for me judging this one, y’all did NOT make it easy!! The stories and art were all so excellent, some made me laugh, others made me cry, I was extremely impressed with the quality of the entries across the board. It was near impossible to pick just one, but after much deliberation, I have chosen a winner.
Congratulations to
flyteck!
Pulling from the example myth was a bold and unexpected choice that really surprised me, but you expanded it into such a beautiful and sad tale that tugs at the heartstrings. I really appreciated how this story illustrates the origin of the myth, (as told by his mother), to the event that tragically shattered his belief. The implication of his quip being tied to losing his family is so devastating, but creates the background for a very compelling character I want to hear even more about.
I was also equally impressed by the subtle and careful visual details used throughout the piece, your chosen medium really heightened and supported the story that you wrote. For example, using branches from the trees to create organic comic panels, reinforces this idea of a family tree connecting all of these equids through the generations. This makes the return to square panels after the tragic reveal of the equid alone with the burnt tree all the more heart wrenching. Truly an exceptional showcase of visual storytelling. Enjoy and take care of Argent!
