The first encounter Amulet had ever had with one of these birds of prey was truly all by chance. She had been trekking though the mountainous range that stood between two of her favourite grazing grounds, it being unbeknownst to her that these odd-looking birds called the same mountains home. Bearded Vultures are also known as "bone eaters" in Crete because they are the only animal that feeds almost exclusively on bone. They'll often throw larger bones from high heights down onto the rocks and cliffs below so they shatter and allow the birds to get to the bone marrow first and then the smaller bones following. Amulet had been rounding a corner of a large rock when a bone fell from the sky and broke into smaller bits on the rocks just a few feet in front of her. If that hadn't shocked her speechless the large, orange-red feathered bird that descended right after it had her utterly confused. She had never seen a bird that large or of that appearance before nor had she ever witness any behaviour similar to what the vulture displayed. She was absolutely fascinated with them from that day forward.
