whats an iko?

(eye - koh) glad you asked! an iko is a prehistoric mammal that was previously believed to be extinct. they range from 100 - 160 cm at the shoulder or roughly the size of a polar bear. ikos are easily identifiable by their build of very broad shoulders and smaller hindquarters, which makes them excellent burrowers. they are omnivorous and have retractable saber-like teeth as well as dexterous front paws with opposable thumbs that can grasp things similar to monkey paws.
in the ice age, ikos hunted mammoths, but have since found their new most coveted delicacy: baobao fruit. (bow-bow)
ikos are known to headbutt whatever they're hunting, due to their incredibly thick skulls and bulky front half. its not uncommon to see an iko running full speed at a baobao tree to headbutt it and knock the citrus-like fruit down.
ikos form strong social bonds with each other and remain loyal for a lifetime. they are relatively friendly and curious about humans. patience and a handful of baobao could very well gain you a companion for life.

history

ikos are a prehistoric mammal and have been dated back to the ice age. they seem to have evolved to hunt mammoths and were close in relation to saber-tooth tigers. they were incredibly adaptable and found all over the world, however, they are most commonly found in cold climates.

It is believed that ikos are descended from the northern lights, which give them their unique intelligence as well as broad variations in coat color, horn, and ear shape. ikos are believed to be a mixture of animal spirits in corporeal form.

one unifying trait among all ikos is the love of baobao fruit, named for its shape. this mysterious fruit is fuzzy, hard, ovular, and smells strongly of citrus. it cannot be cracked by force alone, but twisted open along a seam on its shell. once opened, it reveals a chewy orange layer with an almost gummy like consistency. underneath that is the tender white meat of the baobao; an incredibly sweet and tangy treat that has a special chemical all ikos love. at the center, surrounded by seeds, is the baobao heart. (ironically shaped like a star) ikos must ingest these stars in order to be fertile and produce offspring. ikos harvest the baobao by headbutting the trunk of the tree and shaking the fruit loose. ikos only eat baobao fruit once a year, during a huge festival celebrating spring and new life.

what really sets an Iko apart from most mamals are their incredible front paws! they have specialized, distinctive paw pads that act as snowshoes. they also provide grip like human fingerprints. however, their most important adaptation is their opposable thumbs which allow ikos to open their favorite delicacy: baobao fruit!

ikos are also recognizable by their brightly colored tongues and retractable saber teeth. as omnivores, those huge canines can get in the way when ikos are grazing, and so they evolved to have retractable saber fangs, similar to snakes. (warning: snake gif) ikos also have highly sensitive whiskers, called whiks. whiks have colored orbs on the end that allow ikos to sense the slightest brush of air, making it incredibly hard to sneak up on them!

there are a wide array of horns/antlers and ear shapes ikos can have. its believed that family units pass on specifc ear/horn combitations which can be used to trace lineage. while it's rare, there are some ikos born without horns.

Ikos come in a wide array of sizes, colors, tail lengths, and fur textures/lengths. while the majority of ikos share the same general body structure, there have been a few cases of rare ikos with mutations like wings, multiple tails, glow, spikes, etc.
