Caxolotls
After Axolotls became a critically endangered species a group of breeders designed a species that was more adapt to harsher conditions.
During that process, a breeder accidentally dropped their cactus plant into the breeding waters.
Surprisingly the new species began to EAT the cactus and then the offspring those lotls produced, had cactus gills!
They store extra fat in their cactus gills and the spines of the cacti filter the oxygen into their system.

Caxolotls are very easy to breed, but keeping the eggs alive is another story. Caxolotl eggs are very spiky and resemble grass burrs. Sadly due to the spikes the eggs tend to... impale each other. Leaving only one or two surviving eggs, if any at all! Because of this both caxolotl parents are able to produce egg clutches, however a male caxolotl must be involved to fertilize them.
So malexfemale pairs can breed as well as malexmale pairs. FemalexFemale pairs however cannot breed. As well as that MalexMale pairs are more likely to loose the clutch, than a malexfemale pair.
Females can produce 5 clutches before becoming infertile and males can produce 3.
