I believe that every animal deserves to be protected in some way, but I do have a special place in my heart for narwhals. In my opinion, narwhals are truly fascinating creatures. Not much is known about them, since they are very shy and uncommon to see animals. The narwhal’s “horn” or “tusk” is actually just a long tooth. Scientists have been unable to figure out what function their long tooth has in the animal’s life.

Although narwhals are not currently endangered, their numbers are decreasing due to climate change and hunting. They are capable of diving to extreme depths, but they do need to rise to the surface of the ocean in order to breathe. There are known cases where narwhals get trapped under large sheets of sea ice, unable to break the ice to breathe. Humans have hunted narwhals for years for their vertebrae, “tusk”, teeth, and meat. Due to climate change, sea ice is decreasing. However, this makes the narwhal more vulnerable to being hunted, since people can spot them in the open ocean. Narwhals are not capable of surviving in captivity, which demonstrates why we must help these beautiful animals.

What else would you like to save?: otter thought briefly, but the answer seemed clear. "well, otters," she said with a small grin. "they're super cute, what with the hand holding so they don't drift away and having favorite pebbles and all that," she laughed. "they're so cute, gosh, but they were almost hunted to extinction a long time ago. they're doing way better now, of course, but they're still threatened." she sighed as she thought of the terrible things they were doing to the oceans. "i don't know a ton about otters and what's threatening them, but i know oil spills are a big one." she shuddered at the thought of little otters coated in thick, dark oil and struggling to breathe and swim. "and fishing nets, of course, those hurt just about every marine creature. now, i know i'm not exactly a fish eater, but it seems pretty horrible to hurt so many creatures just to eat fish. if i could, i'd try to encourage alternate methods of fishing." she chuckled as she added, "well, obviously i prefer a vegetarian diet, but that's just me." she considered the topic a little more. "i think pollution effects just about every animal, too, so i'd try to clean up the beach. heck, what's with the 'i would' - i will!" with a triumphant look on her face, she paraded down to the beach to clean up litter. it might not save the world, but every little bit helps. Sea lions are the too often forgotten about marine mammal. Dolphins are iconic; playful, intelligent beyond belief, and beloved by everyone. Sea otters are fluffy to the max, and have successfully stolen everybody’s hearts. Whales are happy and graceful, earning the respect of folks worldwide. Even seals, who are pinnipeds like sea lions, are cherished for their cute clumsiness and their fat, blubbery bodies bouncing about. Sea lions are the species that Bakari would want to save.

California sea lions will sometimes strand on the beaches of the west coast of the United States. Sometimes animals will just become ill, but there are other reasons animals may strand. Cataracts and other eye issues are extremely common in all pinnipeds, so some sea lions will be less fit to hunt and sustain themselves due to partial or complete blindness. Some of these animals will strand after escaping death at the jaws of a hungry shark. Far too many sea lions must be rescued due to entanglement in plastic and discarded fishing nets and gear. Something somehow even more troubling than plastic pollution is plaguing the population of sea lions. Many find these animals to be a nuisance, since fisherman compete with them for fish, and some cruel people will shoot at these animals.

While occasional stranding can be expected, phenomenons referred to as UME’s, or “Unusual Mortality Events”, have been occurring, the latest occurring in the summer of 2015. During a UME, mass amounts of sea lions will strand on the beach, and many will perish. This typically occurs because the fish that sea lions need to be eating swim further and deeper off the coast. This is due to warming surface water temperatures caused by climate change. Mother sea lions must leave their pups behind on the beach for longer periods of time to go hunt for enough food to sustain themselves and produce nutritionally adequate milk for their babies. Many pups end up sick and starving, in need of human intervention in order to survive. Even when pups are strong and healthy enough for release, they are still not big and strong enough to swim out far and deep enough in the ocean to catch the fish they need to survive. Therefore, some of these animals will strand again, and some may even strand for a third time. Once an animal has needed to be rescued on three occasions, the government will step in a deem the animal non-releasable. This is the point when reputable zoos and aquariums can step in and take in the sea lions in need, but the ending is not so sweet for sea lions who cannot find homes when such a high volume of them are in need.

With so much tragedy plaguing our Earth’s sea lions, we need to do more. These animals are too often overlooked or forgotten. They are just as important as every other creature in the sea, and they deserve the people’s love too.

Vulnerable, not quite yet endangered, from habitat loss due to the destruction of or blockage of naturally warm spring water. These bumbling softies are one of Taima's top concerns amongst ocean life. What, you may ask, is this marine creature that so desperately is teetering on the edge of being endangered? The manatee, the ever so graceful sea cow.

"They play very important roles in their habitats." Taima rambles on. Manatees typically consume seagrasses and any freshwater vegetation, which means they play a major role in influencing plant growth wherever they reside. They help maintain the health of the water vegetation, making sure nothing overgrows and that the sea grass beds are kept at comfortable, healthy lengths.

"Thus, resulting in a marine creature that is a vital necessity for their homes. Manatees are not just soft, bumbling sea cows, but are what makes a difference to wherever they are found. Not only are they important to the environment, but they are also undeniably adorable" Taima mused, tapping the ground with a hoof as she stared off to the side. She seemed to be deep in thought.

 Catherine approached the door to the girls' home, giggling softly to herself. She quickly rang the doorbell before softly running what she'd say next through her head as she waited for the door to open. With a sudden creak of wood, she shouted:
 "Surprise!"

 Eirwen stood holding the door open, absolutely dumbfounded.
 "C-Catherine?! Oh my god, what are you doing here?" Pippin overheard the commotion from her bedroom and came to see what was going on. When she saw who it was, she ran in for a hug.
 "Cathy!!! You're home!"

 The group helped her unload before sitting down on the sofa, giving Catherine time to explain why she had suddenly appeared so unexpectedly.
 "Ah, the competition got out early. I absolutely crushed everyone as usual." Catherine had been away at a Pokémon card game tournament. She competed for money, the reason why the three could afford a nice place to stay during this trip, and it would appear that she won based on the smile plastered across her face. "Anyways, I wanted to get you guys a gift and I was hoping that you'd pick it out for me." Catherine pulled out her laptop, logging in quickly and finding the webpage.

 Pippin's face lit up again with anticipation. She loved receiving gifts and was hoping to get something grand! Catherine was finally ready and turned the screen around. It was a.....bunch of animal plushies?
 "I'm going to pay for both of you to sponsor an endangered animal in honor of this trip. You'll get a stuffed animal for doing it, too! Here's your choices."

 The two girls stared at the list for a long while. It was incredibly difficult to pick — how could you say which animals were deserving of help and which ones were not? Who were they to give help to some while denying it to others? Pippin's eyes teared up and Eirwen bit her lip.
 "What's wrong? Catherine asked, concerned. "Was this not a good idea?" The two shook their heads and Eirwen began to speak.
 "They all deserve to be saved." Hearing her words, Catherine gave a bittersweet smile.
 "Yeah. I wish I could help them all." Pippin suddenly slammed her fist on the coffee table in front of them.
 "Then let's get back out there and earn enough sand dollars to buy them all. Who's with me?!" The three all smiled and cheered, especially Catherine who was proud of the younger girl. She was so determined and strong, and Catherine couldn't help but look up to that.

Nalu waits with bated breath, binoculars clutched tightly in hand. Dusk spreads like reaching fingers on the horizon, silent except for the waves. In the distance a foamy wave gives way to a single dorsal fin. The ginger heifer standing on the pier gasps, barely catching sight of the tag that marks the beast.

"Deep Blue," Nalu whistles. One of the largest female great whites ever recorded, and here she was! Just off the coast and a few hundred feet of waves between them. "I can't believe," the heifer gasps. Great white numbers were slowly decreasing around the world, and if she could save just one... It would be worth it.

"Tomorrow, Lucky, we surf with sharks," Nalu crows. The coral, now in a wheelbarrow, says nothing.

Amour was ecstatic for this prompt, she loved wildlife and was very passionate about animal conservation. She didn’t even have to think about her answer to this prompt.

“I’d absolutely love to save sea turtles!” she exclaimed excitedly. “I’ve always adored them. They’re super cute, but they need our help. There’s a lot of garbage floating around in the ocean, and they’ve been mistaking floating junk for tasty fish and eating it! It’s extremely unhealthy for them, it can make them sick and even kill them, or cause permanent injuries. I’d love to host a beach cleanup here on the island, so no more garbage ends up in the ocean!”

“imagine what the world would be like today, if we didn’t have all of this damage left behind.. it would be a beautiful world. or, more of a beautiful world. maybe we should go tell enke about it, huh azurina?”

If Jolene could save something else… What would it be? Enid was just a start- something in front of her she could help with. “Does it have to be an animal?” She remarked, brow furrowed in deep concentration. “Uhm, if it doesn’t… I would choose the oceans as a whole.” She’d heard about the trash in the ocean- plastic collecting into islands, finding its way into the bodies of sea life… it was truly an insidious problem. Cleaning the ocean would mean saving so many more lives- fish and coral and everything in between. So much life relied on the cleanliness of the oceans, and yet, they weren’t being taken care of at all.

Oh dear. Thalia could hardly comprehend saving something else given how full her hooves were with Spooks alone. Then again, what were the odds of her ward of choice was haunted? Surely her luck wasn't so bad she'd end up with two cursed creatures? Right? Well, it wouldn't hurt to just talk about it would it? Honestly she'd always been drawn to pretty things, so her thoughts almost immediately focused on jellyfish. There was something she found absolutely soothing about the colors they gave off. The idea of drifting off to sleep with the gentle ambiance of jellyfish life was extremely appealing to her and, while it would take a bit of research first, it was something she was confident it was within her ability to nurture; given, of course, that it was not also haunted.
