Thousands of legends cite Scryl Hounds as a legion's weapon of choice in war, for they could simply crush the enemy with their powerful magic spells or their sharp, razorlike teeth.
Probably 45 years ago, however, a group of biologists travelled to an unmapped island, upon which they found a species of large, horned canine-like beings, each with a shifting tip of magic on their tail. They matched the descriptions of the fabled Scryl Hounds a striking amount, save for the fact that they were less of the "horrifying, merciless brute" and more of the "intelligent, notably adorable giant labrador". They were not much larger than great danes, and far more intelligent. They proved to hold a fully coherent and very interesting conversation with the scientists, proving not only their existence, but also their pure intellect. The hounds and the scientists ended up getting along fairly well, and some Scryls came back to the mainland to learn about the other species there. From there, many people desired a Scryl of their own, forming friendships with the hounds, to the point where a hound and a human were practically the same being. Now, Scryls have seamlessly integrated into society, and you can probably find one at any turn you take.
