how do you get one?

You get an HG through Adoption, which is explained in the Information Center post linked. Basically, look for Gypsies that don't have halters and still have a background, however be sure to check that they haven't already been adopted and just not updated. To do this, simply check the last post or look for a post made by the artist. Already owned horses will have a halter and if remembered to be updated, they will have their name and their owner's username on the first post.

HGs can also be obtained through breedings and customs. Customs are occasionally opened by artists in the fanclub, you just have to keep checking. Do not ask for a custom however, or pester artists for one. It is against Hyrulian Gypsy rules. Breeding slots can be obtained from members if they're willing to give you a slot from two of their own horses for you to use in a breeding when they open up. Do not pester HG owners repeatedly for slots though, they have every right to turn you down if they don't want to give you a slot. Please understand this.
