Being that there aren’t technically official names for pets (other than staff pets) the only way to change it is to try and make it a new trend, by referring to them as oni mask dogs rather than kitsune mask dogs.

But I must disagree with calling them oni mask dogs as the masks are not oni masks. Oni is a Japanese demon/spirit and as far as I know an oni maks is characterized by sharp teeth/tusks, horns and are usually a humanoid demon face.
I will agree that the masks that these dogs have are not the traditional shape of a kitsune mask, but most have patterns that resemble the ones found on a kitsune mask (with some artistic liberty)

{I do agree with this !! Since I'm on the pet value thread a lot I plan to refer to the dogs this way [Kitsune Mask Dogs] in the future. You're right about the masks as well, so I think sticking with Kitsune Mask Dogs is a good compromise here!}

I would have a much larger problem calling them Oni and would just call them Kitsunes anyways.
I think of an entirely different creature when I think of Oni.
