I just think the CS community could use a little touch up on their terms because it rubs me the wrong way and it's a little insulting.

As a quick note, while many kitsune in folklore* may have up to nine tails (kyūbi), they can also have just one tail. The lack of multiple tails on the 2013 store pet alone would not negate its categorization as a "kitsune".

That having been said, based on the Store Pet Guide (which is not necessarily an "official guide", but is still a useful and readily shared resource!), the dogs from 2013 are actually "Kitsune Mask" dogs, rather than being outright kitsune foxes.
In comparison, the fennecs from 2020 are recognized as "Kitsune Fox(es)".
Over the years, many pets have come to be known by shorter names than their "original" community names - as many of the newer pets don't have specific names attached to them by the community, and the "kitsune" association has just stuck with the 2013 dogs even if they are not necessarily based off of kitsune foxes (and instead are based off of the kitsune masks).

Back in 2013, Saikiyo confirmed that the masks on these outcomes were based off of kitsune masks:

And the tan one's mask was inspired by Haku's mask from Naruto, I confess. XD

*when I say folklore, I want to make it clear that I'm referring to Japanese folklore, as that is what I'm personally most familiar with - I don't presume to speak for any cultures or folklore I'm not familiar with, or claim to be an expert on Japanese folklore ^^

yeah im gonna have to agree with the posters above, there's a fine reason the store pets are named after kitsune masks, since their mask designs come from kitsune mask designs. im not sure where the idea of oni masks being flat came from, those ive seen are very textured and have lots of contours to show the scariness of the oni's expression and to make them more dramatic to look at in a theatre setting. i think the current naming convention for these store pets is fine!

I agree with this, or just mask dogs even, kitsune is VERY unclear when it comes to store pets and pets in general

Issue here is the names are ultimately UNOFFICIAL and community driven - the staff can't force the general public to stop calling them Kitsune dogs.

{that's certainly not what I'm implying; staff does however run the name wiki and changing the dogs' names would be the first place to start. That and encouraging the community to refer to them in the new manner would resolve the problem in a matter of months.}

no matter what staff does, it's not like it's official either. they can't just force or encourage the general public to stop referring to the 2013 store dogs "Kitsunes" as some else. People are still going to refer to them as Kitsunes because it's the first thing that'll come to mind, and has been referred to as such ever since their release. That's like trying to force the skelebun, drink/eat me/ or either cerbs as something else. You can't change the design they were based on, as they were still based on Kitsune masks. I don't really see this personally affecting anybody or getting them seriously offended because anybody can refer to whatever pet by whatever name they want to, so you can just refer to them as whatever YOU want, but that doesn't mean everybody else has to follow.

Edit: Just want to mention that I don't really even see people mention the 2020 kitsune foxes as much as the 2013 kitsunes as they've been around longer and are actually considered to be worth 1-1.5 MA. So it would just be really confusing change for the trading community too. Easy solution would for you guys to just refer to them as however you want, and letting others refer to it as Kitsunes. It does no damage.
