Just gonna give my two cents on this c:
I do support to give examples on what kind of negative comment would be acceptable. After all, as many have said it IS a discussion thread, but that doesn't mean we're not free to express our opinions.
Personally, I feel the comments that would be similar to "bashing" or "rude" would be similar to the following:
- "I personally don't like this outcome because it looks ugly" - Not bashing, but maybe just a bit insulting; as an artist, you don't release something to the world unless you are happy with it; and if you wanted critique on it, you wouldn't release it as something everyone would adopt -- you'd instead post it and ask for people to comment on it. In any case, a comment like this that doesn't give any reason to their dislike will of course come off as insulting -- the person who is happy with his creation, will read this and of course wonder why. Although, it could also be that most of our members are young and, while they would know what looks good in their eyes and not, may not know exactly how to express or explain why they find something strange looking.
- "I had high hopes for this pet, but now I'm just disappointed" - Again I don't feel this is bashing, but as an artist I'd feel it would be rude. It's like saying out loud, "I wanted to be friends with you, but lolnope you're too boring/ugly for me so nevermind." Imagine if you were the one who put time and effort into your work, and in the end someone makes you feel like your effort spent wasn't worthwhile. Perhaps it's not meant to be that way, but it would certainly come off that way, and on the internet it's easy to be misunderstood. (This is I believe also why we're advised not to get too hyped about the pets until they're grown...it's just easier to cope with disappointment that way, at least in my experience :p)
- "The tail should have been like this, the hair should have been like this, it should have looked this way" and similar comments - Again, not bashing for me, but is a comment that could be done without. As I've said sometimes in response to comments like these, they're not really helpful because the outcome has been released -- nothing we say or do afterwards can change how it looks. Expressing disappointment over it will not change anything about that pet, why do we need to say how we wanted it to look when we know nothing else can be done? Of course, it'll make the artist think back and second guess himself, when in the beginning he was happy with how it looked anyway. I think a more polite way of expressing this kind of comment would be "I wish the tail was like this...but at least I was happy with this other detail." or even "I wish the tail was like this. Oh well, maybe on the next pet!"
- I think comments that are plain bashing would be extreme things like "Ugh, this pet is hideous" "The coloring is waaaay off" "What was going through the artist's head when making this?!?" etc etc, but so far nothing this extreme I've seen on discussion threads...at least for me. xD
In other times, I feel it's just a result of consequence. Of course, if you see one "unhappy" post after another after another after another, of course it's only human nature to feel let down. You worked on a piece of art, worked till you were satisfied, put it up to share it with the world, and when you see all those unhappy remarks on something you wanted to share of course you'd feel disappointed. Of course as artists, we can't expect the world to be sugar-happy-accept-all-your-stuff-without-complaint, but I hardly think that adoptables that are released for public consumption are appropriate receivers of critique. They're not art that is put up to be edited or critiqued on -- they're there to be adopted and owned without any input really from the public's part c:
Anyway just my two cents. Gah sorry for the rambling. I hope it made sense. But yes anyway I support proper "negative comments", and hopefully sorting out stuff on the Discussion threads XDD;;
