i swear they're up to something.

they're watching from the shadows, their silhouettes perfectly still against the horizon. two pairs of unblinking marble
eyes always locked on to mine, never ceasing to shift. their pale faces are oddly neutral, showing no sense of
emotion.

they scare me— no. they terrify me.

their steps are both synchronized. they make no sound when they wander across the golden-lit fields, as if they are
chasing me down. they throw messages between each other with the twitch of their eyelids, observing me like how
students would watch a beetle in the grass.

and under their unblinking gazes, it's impossible not to break.

sometimes i collapse in the middle of the wheat fields, and crumple like a castle of sand. each and every
morning i point to them in the distance, but no one sees them like i do. in fact, no one sees them all.

sometimes i wonder if i'm just imagining the whole thing.
sometimes i wonder if i'm going insane.

but no-– that's the easy way out. it would be foolish to cling onto that wish after all those moons.

i don't know who they are.
but i know they are real, and hunting me down.

the world is filled with deception, it's nothing more than a lifeless
dome swallowed up with the fire of betrayal. a lifeless dome filled to the brim with the tears of anguish and worry.

because at this very hour, she is sending in the soldiers to fulfill a personal vendetta.

and they're already here.
gently watching in the shadows.

and they're not normal— not at all what you'd expect.

instead of emotions, they are equipped with indifference. instead of flowing with wondrous thoughts, they are
glitching with calculations. instead of the gift of flesh and blood, their lifeless bodies are filled with robotic circuitry.

i could see why she would create these robotic creatures.

they obey without objections.
they are ruthless and logical.

they are beyond dangerous.

every night i lie awake staring at the ceiling.

planning to destroy those robotic creatures.
planning to destroy her.

she sauntered along the fields of wheat, gaze scanning over her surroundings in a familiar routine, locking onto her target. a wave of interest passed over her as she studied the target's erratic movements.

the bounce of their steps.
the tilt of their head.

these creatures were just so odd.
and yet so…. beautiful at the same time.

she sped up to closely admire the boldness of the target-- taking in every single detail. her footsteps raced against the rock beneath her paws, clumsily ramming into her counterpart with a trip. her calculations glitched as her companion halted to an abrupt stop.

oh no.

her counterpart snapped his head around, shooting her a warning stare with that flame and fire gaze. his rigid movements communicated one single message. a message that had been recited from the very second she'd stepped foot onto this place.

don't mess up.

she fitted a slow nod onto her face, uncertainty trailing at the back of her head as she marched after him. her lips pressed together in annoyance— why did his programmer have to be so superior compared to her's?

he was perfect. the way he was intended to be.
while she… was a failure— flawed just like those odd, beautiful creatures.

he floated down the fields of gold, shards of sunlight catching onto his face, and yet he didn't take a second to admire the ribbon sunsets. no. he was efficient, crowned with perfection from his programmer.

it was a shame her programmer didn't do the same for her.

she wouldn't feel all these pesky emotions that swarmed at her vision, the jealousy, rage, and anger. she wouldn't have to deal with the wondrous thoughts that brushed across her circuit.

she would be perfect…
just like him—

her thoughts clattered to the floor like glass as her counterpart rammed his shoulder into her chin. a rare hiss slipping out of his jaws, ''are you coming?'' his voice was a husky whisper in her ear, ''you're screwing up the mission already.''

he rode through the fields, marching along the steady paths of gravel. his eyes slid to his target, a creature idiotically prancing through the golden gates. unaware of what was coming.

this evening was going to be the chance to change the world.
—to change the future.

and his foolish counterpart was already making the odds of success rapidly decline.
slowly falling like the motion of his non-existent heart.
