It Started With The News

I. It Started With The News

xxxxxxxx"More reports coming in of dangerous crimes all around the city," a news anchor said on the TV. Invictus recognized her as Kalon Couric, she was well known. His ears were against his head in a stupor, his thoughts boggled down by other things. The TV was simply background noise. His hands made quick work of his keyboard- he was programming a black box pen-test, which meant he had no more info on what he was trying to hack then the standard black hat hacker would know. He had a lead on something, one of the local gangs. He wasn't a white hat hacker, but he wasn't a black hat either. He considered himself more of a vigilante then anything else. He just didn't fight. Many a anonymous tip had made his city safer. That's what mattered.

xxxxxxxxSomething was off about this gang, they were getting funding from someone, but who? And how? They were a small time gang - so who was investing in them and why? For what purpose? Invictus furrowed his brow in focus, scouring all resources he could. They had a trade in making and selling various alcohols, as far as Invictus was aware. They're partnered with the Oriental Trading company - who helps produce, package and ship ---

xxxxxxxx"The latest attack in the Bay area, on 59th and Q," -- Invictus shot away from his work. 59th and Q. Poppy! She was near there. Invictus' semi artificial heart pounded in his chest. For being half AI, he had vivacious amounts of empathy. She was the reason for that. She was everything to him. She made his heart race. He fumbled in his pockets for his phone, shakily dialing her number.

"Hello?" came the sweet voice on the other end.

"Poppy! Thank the stars!" returned Invictus' gruff voice. "Are you okay? The news, there was an attack near you--"

"I'm okay, sugar cube. I'm safe," she replied. Sugarcube. That was her nickname for him. He liked it a lot.

xxxxxxxxInvictus's breath hitched in his throat, and he exhaled slowly.

"I'm so glad. I just wanted to check in," he said, his deep voice sounded gravelly, tired.

"You sound tired Sugarcube. What's going on? What's got you wrapped up in your mind?" Poppy's sweet voice asked on the other end. Invictus let out a rough chuckle.

"I've got a lead on one of the gangs in town. I'm close to that anonymous tip. I can feel it," he said, heart picking up pace. "It brings me such a thrill to have this city safer." he continued, emphasizing the "such".

"The one you've been telling me about? Oriental? Please be careful," Poppy said sweetly, her tone gentle. Invictus nodded.

"Yep, those guys. I'll be careful, and I'll take care of myself. You know I never get caught" he replied quickly, drawing in a breath.

xxxxxxxxInvictus had not realized it yet, but he had made two mistakes during that conversation. It would soon come to pass what those mistakes were, and just how severe they were to make.

Anonymous Tips

Postby cheetahss » Sun Apr 16, 2023 12:15 pm

II. Anonymous Tips

xxxxxxxx"More severe, endangering crimes rapture the city, but there is onehero on top of it all. One, unknown society member has been giving anonymous tips to police-" said Kalon Couric, who's voice was background noise. Invictus was close to the truth. He knew he was. But something was missing.

xxxxxxxxThe recent bay area attack, where Poppy had lived, was just the tip of the iceberg. All these crimes and attacks, happening simultaneously had to mean something, they had to be connected. Invictus' heart pounded in his chest. His Kali Linux could only take him so far. It was time to pull out all the stops. He would do it for Poppy. He had to. Deep down he knew she was capable of taking care of herself. But he still felt some need to protect her.

xxxxxxxxDrawing in a sigh, the half organic, half AI kalon unbuttoned the first few buttons of his shirt, revealing a transparent chest cavity, and his ever beating heart. On the glass, and clearly into his heart itself was a single USB 3 port. It was dangerous. what he was about to do. He would have to tap into his neural network and explore the web on a level he had never before. His breath hitched in this throat as he opened up a command prompt and booted up his AI programming. He reached behind his PC for a dusty, but labeled, USB 3 cable, swallowed, and plugged it into his chest. His physical consciousness faded, and he slipped into the ether of the internet.

xxxxxxxx His programming was quick to takeover, but even retaining a shred of his self awareness allowed him to control his exploration like a Lucid dream. His first hit was oriental-co.com. From a standard view, nothing was out of the ordinary. Just your standard company website. His AI alerted, strangely enough, to the companies "contact us" form. The only odd thing out on the form was the "service requested" section. It wasn't every day a form had something like this. But what to input? Oriental was linked to the bay area attack. From what he recalled, the attack was targeted, on one specific enterprise. He typed in "59th and Q" and no other form info. Instead of the website flagging that required fields were missing, it loaded to an entirely unusual webpage. It was the exact address, time and location of the attack orchestrated. This was the exact location the news had reported on. On top was labeled "Enemy Hitlist".

xxxxxxxxWith haste, Invictus went back to the "contact us" page and input "Enemy Hitlist". There it was. A full list of locations, times, dates, addresses and even sometimes specific targets of various other, similar companies. Some had already occured. Others were going to. Invictus had no time to waste.

    xxxxxxxxOff went the anonymous tip.

Not Adding Up

III. Not Adding Up

xxxxxxxx Weeks had passed. Invictus had to wait out to see if his anonymous tip got through. And it was one hell of a waiting game. He had stayed at home for the weeks he waited, not wanting to miss an ounce of the news. After what felt like eons, Kalon Couric appeared on screen, the channels breaking news tune intense and loud.

xxxxxxxx"Breaking news this evening. An anonymous tip led police to discover a hit list made by Oriental Co, which had listed their targets, and the dates and times the attacks were to occur. Police arrived on scene for each one and, after violent outbreaks, arrested the perpetrators each time. Only one listed attack did not actually occur. A place called Cafe Innocence. Police also decided to raid the Oriental Company Warehouse, only to find it completely empty.

xxxxxxxx What? Completely empty? How?! Oriental was a legitimate company, right? Wait. One attack didn't occur. Invictus hopped up from the couch, nearly eating the floor he walked on as he quickly strode to his computer, fingers fumbling with the buttons of his shirt. He booted up his AI program, plugged himself in, and slipped back into the ethernet. He made hasty work of getting back to the company website, and was relieved to find it was still up. He went to the "contact us" page, and in the "service requested" section, he input "Cafe Innocence". Again, no errors popped up about missing parts of the form. Invictus' heart pounded in his chest. Even in the temporal space that was the ethernet, he knew his heart was racing.

xxxxxxxx Once more, Invictus knew what he needed to do. He had a meeting with the Oriental CEO. This was what made his heart race. Cracking down on the criminal scum that made Poppy's life all the more endangered.

Innocence

Postby cheetahss » Sun Apr 16, 2023 12:53 pm

IV. Innocence

xxxxxxxx Invictus had hastily logged off his PC and bitlocked it, tidying himself up. His life could very well be on the line. He took care to walk a distance before taking a taxi to the cafe, swallowing intently as it came into view. His heart pounded in his chest. This was for Poppy. He would get to the bottom of this. She needed a safe city. And he would be the one to bring it to her. This was the wolves den. It had to be. Why else would this establishment, listed on the hitlist, not be attacked?

xxxxxxxx"You okay sir?" came the voice of the taxi driver. "We're here." he stated. Invictus shook himself from his thoughts. "Sorry, yes. Here," he handed the taxi driver his pay, and stepped out onto the sidewalk, just in front of the cafe. The door to the place felt suddenly larger then it had been before, a pit of fear growing in Invcitus' stomach. On a hanging wooden sign scrawled "Cafe Innocence" in a fancier, but legible typeset. Drawing in a deep breath, he pushed open the establishment door, the jingle of a bell above it alerting patrons and staff alike to his presence.

xxxxxxxxInside the cafe there was a bar and mostly booths that ran along the windows. A sign stated to self seat, so it was at the bar he sat. The server behind the bar was a rough, larger male. "What can I get for you?" his gruff voice came. Invictus made eye contact with the larger male.

xxxxxxxx"Um..." Invictus lowered his tone. "An Innocent Meeting, please." The server's ears perked up in understanding. "Please, come around back," the server said, setting down the glass he had been cleaning and gesturing to the kitchen door. Invictus silently followed the server, eyes darting around in fear. In the kitchen itself, the server pulled on a knife block, and a hidden doorway opened, revealing descending stairs. "CEO is expecting you. Pull on the lever on the other side when you're on your way back up," the server said simply, standing aside for Invictus.

xxxxxxxx"Th-thank you..." Invictus said plainly, tail swishing in fear. He stepped past the server, and the hidden door closed behind him. He descended down the stairs, finding an old rundown, nearly empty speakeasy beneath the cafe. The only kalon that looked of importance had her back turned to him. Her ears swiveled towards the sound of his arrival.

xxxxxxxx"So, Invictus, tell me." came a familiar, honeyed tone. The woman turned around, drawing a breath from a cigarette she held between her fingers. "How did you enjoy doing my work for me?" before Invictus stood his beloved Poppy. She was the mastermind behind all this?! How?! Why?! Invictus' breath hitched in his throat.

xxxxxxxx"Your- work... for... you?" Invictus croaked.

xxxxxxxx"I should have figured you'd be smart enough to truly find me. I sent you on a wild goose chase, and at the same time, you weeded out the weaker of the gangs in my syndicate," her sweet voice spoke. A cruel giggle escaped her lips. "You're a talented man, you know," she added. Her tone was thick and rich with honey. If given physical form, it'd be so viscous, and a beautiful golden tone.

xxxxxxxxInvictus' jaw clenched. "I trusted you!" he shouted, nose scrunching in anger.

xxxxxxxx"Oh, sugar. An innocent face is the last you should trust." she said with a sneer. A flick of her arm and she had sicked her dogs on Invictus, who's world quickly went dark.
