..But what if I can't draw customs on the computer. Does that mean I can't adopt?

You don't have to draw customs at all. You can adopt/catch whatever you like. In fact, there are very few users who make customs, even less who get their drawings added as real pets for everyone to adopt. Its completely optional ^^
