Unfortunately, that's kinda true for some people. Some might pick on you if they think you don't know your rares, and many might skip over you if you're asking for trades and go for the rarer looking people. However, there are still many who trade and respect people without cool clothes! There's the roleplay population of the game too, they don't care how rare you are as long as you're fun to roleplay with, and there's the people who are less rare themselves. If you want to get these cool clothes easier than trading, you can try to play the Lucky Clovers adventure that they have!
Joining is your choice, but make sure to be wary of the scammers. Some people might ask you to gift them something and promise something in return, or some people might tell you if you accept their trade they'll give you a rare item, just don't trust them because they are 99.9% scams. You might be bullied as well, since it's a kids game and a lot of kids don't have proper etiquette. But don't be discouraged! There's still many, many people who are kind and don't do things like this. I personally play because I just love to see the new animals they come out with as well as dressing all of my animals and decorating my den.
If you're going to join you'll probably want to try it out a little bit, explore a few things, and if you like it, get a membership because it makes it around 10x more fun. Overall it's your choice of course, but I can never find myself leaving the game permanently!
