I honestly don't see Animal Jam shutting down anytime soon. Maybe 5 years into the future, if not more. The difference between Club Penguin and Animal Jam is the way they're run. CP is of course owned by a huge company, Disney, and since they're such a popular and well-known company, they don't really care if one of their smaller assets (aka Club Penguin) goes downhill, because they have many, many more ways to make money. To them, CP was just a little side-project to make more money, they probably weren't planning on keeping it running long-term. Animal Jam, on the other hand, is owned and run by WildWorks. Yes, WildWorks is a child company of National Geographic, but they are much more independent than the child company that Club Penguin was run by. They call the shots on what goes into AJ, and they're the only ones really impacted if the game fails. So, in order to keep the game popular and fun, they have to be much more careful in what they do. If they make too many of the game's features free for everyone, there's no incentive for people to buy membership, so the company would lose money and eventually shut down. If they made membership seem almost mandatory, like CP did, then people would become frustrated with the game and give up on it. I think AJ has found an almost perfect balance between free and paid features, which keeps players coming back to the game, thus creating enough revenue for WildWorks to keep the game running long-term.
Sure, there's some things they could change, like giving nonmembers more animal slots, giving members more clothing inventory, etc. But I think they're doing the best they can as it is right now.
