Personally I think its the choice of the players if they want to trade items for art? People already trade items for masterpieces, which is basically art. I think doing offsite trades for art would be considered fine.

aj, that is how skorm got banned. Well he sold for real money but it still counts as an offsite trade which is against the rules.

Real money is against the rules. Art for items, even offsite, isn't against the rules.

You acknowledge that Animal Jam Content has no real world value, is licensed as part of, and may only be used in, Animal Jam. Accordingly, you may not sell or transfer the Animal Jam Content and all such transfers or sales are null and void.
Non-physical, digital items that you purchase for use in Animal Jam, including memberships, avatar accessories, den items, gems and diamonds are not property owned by you. As a result, you do not have the right to modify, share, transfer or sell these items.
So yeah, you're not allowed to off site trade.

i'll still continue to do aj art for items if people want that type of payment, but otherwise, i'll start using real money or deviantart points for art.

As I understand it, that portion only refers to selling items for real money, or taking images or stealing files from the game and trying to sell or trade them for anything physical (like giving someone a book or money or something of value for a screenshot you took from the game). Because "trading" items for art doesn't actually take anything out of the game, it doesn't really count. When you trade items for art, yes you are getting art outside of the game, however when you give the items to the artist, it's done as a trade in the game. The necklace or whatever item takes the place of the art, and you would trade the spike or what have you for that item. It doesn't involve modifying or transferring images out of the game.
Basically, making art for a person in return for items really means that you're agreeing that your art can't have any real world value, and thus are just donating your time making the art in exchange for items that have no value also. This clause is AJHQ saying you can't profit off of their hard work in terms of making money or valuable real world goods off of it, it doesn't explicitly state anything about virtual goods from other sites, which art technically is as it is transferred between people virtually via the internet.
This would, however, mean that you can't use the AJ Art Studio to make and sell art for real money, regardless of whether or not a masterpiece is made.
