There are likely to be exceptions to this, I'm sure. But for now it seems like, if you don't know where it comes from and no one really elaborates on it, assume it's from the forest.

All I can imagine is young assistants gathering supplies for their masters in the woods and looking up at the defeated dog running with a dragon hot on his tails.

The burnt dog is thought to be a knight (thus his armor) who ran afoul of a dragon.

Seriously? 0_o I thought it was a blacksmith...hence the name of the dog in my collection.
