It's pretty clear that a lot of users weren't too happy with this event, and I've been trying to identify the reasons
why it wasn't satisfying. Personally, though it wasn't my favorite event, I still enjoyed it quite a lot! Also, apologies for how long this post got. I didn't mean to do that.
The big thing that any story needs is
conflict. There was technically conflict in this event, but all of it was caused by a misunderstanding, and the solution was far too simple. The townsfolk needed to have a reason why helping the fae would have been bad for them. Nobody actually disagreed on anything; they just made mistakes because they were missing information.
Many of the mot popular events not only had conflict, they had
conflict where users could choose a side. The best examples of this are the Slumber Party (dreams vs. nightmares) and Egypt (Archie vs. Cleocatra). Plenty of good events didn't have this, and users are happy to invent teams when they aren't clearly handed to us - Notker wings or BRWW, anyone? - but it makes the story conflict feel much more real. This event could have had a fae vs villager split if it had been set up slightly differently.
Finally, there should have been more
user involvement in the story. If you take out the users, the storyline of this event would not have changed at all. The story was also almost completely told through NPC dialogue, which many users don't even read. Doing the ritual to open the portal was fun, but we needed more of that. Users could have helped with Griseldis' spell, making it more like building the bridge in the candy event or fixing the antenna in the space event. Maybe we could have delivered invitations - like the Lost City event - to the villagers, inviting them to dance with the fairies or something. There are plenty of ways user interaction could have been added.
And a few smaller things:
- Too many locations looked similar.
- Too many locations didn't pay off properly. (The contaminated well could have just been mentioned in dialogue.)
- Token trade in chains can be annoying. (A few cream trade-ins would have been fine, but there were too many, and the carvings should have cost herbs or something, not cream.)
- The dance circle was built up too much for something we never saw. (We didn't need to have much there! Just a clickable location with a nice background image and maybe a free item pack!)
- I like when some NPCs are new pets. (I haven't seen anyone complain about this, but using some of the new fairy pets as NPCs would have been neat.)
