Judging by this person's hoard, I don't think so:

It was nice to see a darker variety out of the pastel litter, but the more I look at it the more it bothers me. It looks very blurry compared to the other macaws, and the black being used to shade the coloured parts of the feathers makes it look a bit dirty.

Sadly, I agree-- it does look smudged and a different quality than the other outcomes =( I don't know why the colored portions were given a much darker shade. It sort of breaks the 'immersion' for me as it looks like a picture colored in an art program, not so much a living animal.

I have high hopes for the red-feathered eggs, they look like they're going to turn out nice :)

I actually really like this one ^-^ It reminds me of chalk or pastels. The soft blending of colors are a nice contrast to its siblings.

I must add in once more and say- how many of the pets on CS look like real animals ;)?
I love the colored in a program look, personally which is why I love it so much :)

Yeah I have to say, I wasn't too much of a fan of the rainbow outcomes, especially the really white and bright rainbow one
Until the dark macaw came along and I love it so so much aahhhhh <3
More pastel than some of the other outcomes, and I love the sooty sort of look, reminds me of horses with the sooty gene!
I'm suprised it's not everyones absolute favourite macaw out of that litter!
It's a nice change from the standard rainbow pets you see too
The blur people talk about is actually on the white outcomes too, just harder to see with white than black
And it's part of why this outcome is my fav out of the rainbow macaws because of the smudginess it's really unique and pretty to me :D

A lot of real animals actually look like they've got smudgy markings or sooty markings, but it's really rare to see anything like that on CS so I've really enjoyed it actually and feel like it's the most realistic out of all the bird outcomes of the rainbow litter
(tho they're all not really realistic anyways xD )

The white parrots don't have the same blurriness that the black one does though.

ImageImage

Specifically because the gradient from the coloured wings fades into the white, whereas the black looks more like it was smeared into the feathers rather than the feathers slowly progressing to meet it. It's possible that both were coloured similarly, but how different colours interact with one another can have a profound effect on how blending catches your eye, particularly where very strong colours like black are concerned. Black often has a knack for muddling colours, rather than flowing with them.

CS actually has many sooty, smudgy pets that are not blurry.
Here are a few good examples:

It's pretty easy to get a sooty, smudgy effect without actually making an image blurry to look at. It all depends on how blending is handled, and/or on what colours you use. It also helps to have more defined areas near blurrier parts if you're going to use them; with this dark parrot, there's really no place for your eye to rest that isn't smudged.

All that being said, I can understand why people like this dark macaw-- I've seen people compare it to pastels and chalk, and a lot of people love those materials. Personally speaking, I hate charcoal, chalk, and most pastels because they are generally blurry and hard to define well (their texture and messiness also upsets me)-- but that's just a personal vendetta and I can understand why many people like those materials when I don't.

I do understand what you are saying but if the black was a more defined line I think it would end up too harsh against the bright colors
( the examples you have of sooty/smudging are not against bright colors ) ... I really find it pleasing to my eye
