and here's the pretty trashy fanfic intro i wrote......it's not the best but i might reuse the idea someday and write it better so please don't steal my work ;v;

"why," asked the little angel, "is my name heaven backwards?"

it was evident that this was not the first time she had asked such a question; the mother of this angel only reclined in the soft wisps of cloud and replied tiredly, "because you're an angel, sweetie. you hail from heaven."

all of nevaeh's friends found her name perfectly elegant; it sounded so nice when it rolled off of somebody's tongue, and how poetic it was! heaven spelled backwards - apparently this was revolutionary to nevaeh's friends. from a young age, nevaeh was dreamy; she yearned to lead a "romantic" life. not romantic in the sense for actual romance, oh no; no, little nevaeh was talking about those overdramatic scenes in the old plays where the fair maiden nearly drowns in some sort of pretty river, only to be saved by her prince in shining armor. nevaeh didn't really want or need a prince in shining armor, but to be able to almost drown and survive it! that was surely romantic, right? (actually, it was just deadly and dumb, her siblings told her, but she paid them no attention; perhaps the word "idyllic" would better describe nevaeh's dreams).

so, something like nevaeh would fit her, perfectly! it really didn't. she did not like her name - why couldn't she just be named heaven? in all the plays that nevaeh struggled to get a glimpse of from the clouds (she wasn't allowed to enter the mortal realm, you see) something backwards was usually to convey that something was cryptic, mysterious; all of things which nevaeh liked. but they portrayed something spelled backwards as sometimes evil, too, or something opposite.

she didn't want to be evil; what made it worse was that something backwards could be used to portray something opposite.

there is only one thing in the universe that is so stark in contrast from the pretty lights of heaven and yet could still match heaven in power; the two lived at opposite ends of the world. why, the opposite of heaven was hell, of course.

"why does my name mean hell?" she asked her sibling.
"it doesn't, are you blind? it's heaven spelled backwards, sis. h-e-a-v-e-n. n-e-v-a-e-h. i don't know what you want me to tell you - do you need scientific evidence?"
"no," she said. "thanks, anyway."

no matter how many times kith and kin snorted and told her, "no, silly, it's heaven backwards," nevaeh could still not stop associating her name and literally every fiber of her being with corrupt things. in her spare time, if she wasn't trampling clouds and playing with the souvenirs that her father brought back from earth for her, she made up the utmost "romantic" names for herself. they all sounded better than nevaeh to her - cordelia, genevieve, lily, and the list went on. it caused a lot of confusion - she swapped names like she swapped clothes, and eventually her mother had to tell her to snap out of it.

"you have wings," her mother sighed. "maybe use your imagination and make use of those wings, okay?"

nevaeh had tried to fly, and it did not turn out so well, so the closest she got to flying was leaping from cloud to cloud like some sort of confused frog. but in her mind's eye, she had the prettiest wings ever and they were lined with soft feathers, and she could fly faster and better than any other angel. in reality, they were pitifully small and practically stripped bare of feathers, so they felt disgustingly somewhat bony to the touch.

contrary to the typical angel appearance, nevaeh's mother lacked wings. like how mortals who particularly enjoyed hunting would bring back "souvenirs" from their hunt (like maybe a deer's antlers), divine beings functioned in a surprisingly similar way. what angels and demons both loved was scoring victories in battles; and they just had to bring something back, right?

so, angels would often cut off the horns of demons and mount them on their wall as a display; nevaeh's father's study was lined wall to wall with varied horns. nevaeh rarely went into her father's study, and to her siblings, it seemed like neaveh was deathly afraid of her father's study. they teased her, because silly, what can a pair of horns do? it's just the horns, not the full demon. what nevaeh was afraid of was that she'd become a demon someday and her horns would be mounted on the wall.

demons, on the other hand, cut off the wings of angels, which didn't always work so well. the wings, separated from their source of life, would often be consumed by decay, and then the once pearly feathers would look absolutely disgusting. her mother had lost her wings in that way; apparently both sides had enough decency to put the unfortunate captive to sleep beforehand, so the pain wasn't that bad, her mother told her.

an angel with no wings! outrageous, thought nevaeh, and so she plucked feathers from her own wings to give to her mother so that her mother could "make herself a new pair of wings"; obviously, that was not how wings worked, so her mother saved the feathers and instead wove them into a blanket.

although nevaeh embarrassingly spent hours of her own days feeling proud of herself for plucking feathers from her wings (it was very heroic, right?) she frowned at herself in the mirror. her wings were not exactly bare bone, but to nevaeh's mind (which cared an exceptional amount about vanity) she might as well not even have wings. why, they were dreadfully ugly, she thought; not fluffy at all and not soft to the touch. and this, mashed together with her worries about her name, scared her. was she really descending to hell that fast? she took it as a symbol she would one day break the traditions of angel culture. while the typical children mulled over the monster under their bed, she mulled over the monster that she would become.




years have passed, and nevaeh, more mature but still young, works as a cupbearer for a mortal king as a temporary job. her childhood worries are something she laughs at now; she's now a mature, perfectly respectable angel, and each day that passes by is just fine and ordinary. her wings are no longer so bony; they're lined with golden washed feathers, which glow and radiate an ethereal presence. she no longer plucks feathers from her wings, but she sleeps with the blankets her mother wove her out of her own feathers - just for the nostalgia.


but children have an eye for the paranormal and the extraordinary, after all; nevaeh never really did think her fears would come true.

edit: also i am really sorry if my portrayal of heaven, angels, and hell are offensive!! i wrote this at like 11 pm when i was like "hell yeah let's write some weird crap" and since i'm not religious, i probably don't have a good amount of knowledge on how these things function. i'm really sorry qwq

It’s amazing! I love the detail put into it, and it was quite cute to imagine an angel trying to give another angel it’s wings back with her feathers, it also gives a good point about the name “Neveah” itself!
