On december 18th, does lag affect what pets you get, or is it randomly generated? I've seen a few people worried that they won't get good pets because lag might crash their computer for a few seconds/minutes.

No, it's entirely random number generation

Lag just means it might take you longer than usual to get the pets. It's not like the pound where you get to pick your favorite pet. The computer decides how many of each pet should be released to manage the ratio of the pet to users so OMG So Rares don't become very common because everyone adopted one.

I always wait for a couple hours after rollover so there is little to no lag.

I hope there isn't too many of these kinds of releases though, since I adore Christmas-themed pets,
and it felt like there were too many of these litters last year.

I believe that any pet 'litter' that has a rare in it has a chance to show up. So it means you could end up with an uncommon or common if one of that pet's siblings is a rare or more.

You'd have to check the archive to find litters that have at least one rare in it. For example, this rat litter:

One of them is rare, but the rest of them are uncommon. The box on the 18th gives you the newborn stage, so it has the potential to grow into the uncommon rats or the rare ones.

Not normally a horse fan, but I do like the pps lines. And this cutie reminds me of Spirit a bit lol.

It was possible to get uncommons in the past, but last year it was actually impossible to get anything lower than a rare. Even in litters where there was only one rare pet, the re-released newborn was guaranteed to grow into the rare.
I don't know if it's going to be the same this time around, as it was not the case for 2014 and before, but in 2015, all re-releases were rare or higher.
The year range was 2008-2013, so it might be a bit broader this year.

really? I recall the news saying you could get a 2015 rare even, so i think it was 2008-2015

Huh. Checked the news and it says "a 2014 rare", but I legitimately cannot recall seeing any of those, and I must have IDed several hundred pets that time around.
