I think they mean that because you trade YOUR pets for THEIR fish, you're losing pets and they're gaining them, which means they have the best of both worlds, but I doubt they're tokens. No other event has you trade in pets for them. I think they're just pet items and decorative pieces.

unless, later in the event we can trade them back to the fisherman for the sharks/mallows . One does use small fish to catch bigger ones

I actually want fish right now to decorate my blue shark fisherman gummy but all I get are pets I have and don't want. Although I managed to trade away my double orange gummy shark for a blue one... hmm, now that I think about it, I need worm tokens too. This is going to be a VERY busy day...
