kai and hayley grew up constantly moving from place to place. at some point, the thought of living statically in one place became odd. with a military father and a deadbeat mother, the two spent a lot of their younger years with only each others company. this isolated childhood affected the two in entirely different ways. for kai, he developed his fiery alpha demeanor. in his later years, he became the star of the show, always striving to be the center of attention. he dared to dream big -- he wanted nothing to do with his old, quiet life. on the contrary, there was hayley. she slowly became more quiet and subdued, preferring to keep to herself. as the younger sibling, she was consistently overshadowed by her older brother. but this was no matter. the two still loved each other dearly, but also understood that they wanted very different things out of life. after graduation, hayley chased her dream of becoming a nurse. Her brother, meanwhile, partied it up, skipping between numerous bartending and cooking jobs to pay his rent. at last, kai met someone who changed his life, his lovely fiancee elizabeth, and was ready to settle down.

hayley and kai were returning from a shared vacation when they boarded the plane. neither had any idea that the flight would change their lives as they knew it. while the two siblings were lucky enough to survive the crash with minimal injury, kai's fiancee was not so lucky. kai and elizabeth had just gotten engaged prior to the tragedy ending with her death.
