“science will reveal the truth.”
name: moira o’deorain
age: forty-eight
gender: female
height: six foot and three inches
species: human
sexuality: bisexual
fandom: overwatch
“the struggle for martial superiority is so tedious. the superiority of ideas...that is the quoin of my realm.”
personality: moira has an outward passion for science and the advancement thereof; however, she doesn't have much in the way of limitations when it comes to how far she'll go in her experiments. she has tested on animals, she has tested on herself, and she has tested on other people if given the opportunity to do so. she also has no regard for the feelings of others when she pries for information using invasive questions, such as when she spoke to mei and mentioned how she was interested in mei’s colleagues' research into the long term effects of cryogenic freezing despite knowing that all of the colleagues had died. she has voiced her opinions before and challenged criticisms of her work by pointing out that they were unable to deny her discoveries, even if her methods were unethical. moira does not believe in limitations of science and shows anger towards those who exercise caution in experiments due to ethics. moira has an air of superiority about her and she looks down on those around her, showing annoyance towards most of them especially when it comes to healing. she doesn’t display much in the way of emotion rather than acting in a state of disdain at her surroundings. the only emotion she does display is sadistic pleasure when stealing the life from her enemies, either laughing or thanking them for contributing to her research. despite this sadism, she seems to take a neutral or positive stance towards omnics as she refers to london’s negative stance on them as medieval. more than anything, though, moira is a self-obsessed person. she has a thirst for knowledge and scientific advancement and lacks any concern or remorse for the outcomes of her scientific decisions. she avoids authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions when it comes to science, refusing to be prevented from progressing and willing to go to great lengths to further her research, even if that includes questionable actions.
“idle hands are the devil's workshop.”
background: over a decade ago, o'deorain made waves when she published a controversial paper detailing a methodology for creating custom genetic programs that could alter dna at a cellular level. it seemed like a promising step toward overcoming diseases and disorders and maximizing human potential. dissent among her peers soon followed. many considered her work to be dangerous because of its perceived ethical shortfalls, and o'deorain was even accused of having the same unchecked desire for scientific advancement that some believed had caused the omnic crisis. in addition, other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of moira's research, which further called her discoveries into question. instead of kickstarting her career, her paper seriously damaged her reputation. she received a lifeline in an offer from an unlikely source: overwatch's covert ops division, blackwatch. she continued her work in the shadows while developing new weapons and technologies for the organization. her employment was a closely kept secret, until it was uncovered during inquiries following the venice incident. many high-ranking overwatch officials disavowed all knowledge of her affiliation with them. after overwatch was disbanded, o'deorain was forced to turn to unconventional sources of funding. this time, she was invited to join the scientific collective that had founded the city of oasis. yet some have whispered that the shadowy talon organization had already been supporting her for years, aiding her experiments in exchange for utilizing the results for their own purposes.
“stupidity is not a right.”
abilities: using her left hand, moira expends biotic energy to heal allies in front of her, however, this energy will run out quickly if overused, while her right hand fires a long-range beam weapon that slowly saps her target's health, healing her and replenishing her biotic energy. she can also launch a rebounding sphere; which either has a regeneration effect that heals the allies it passes through, or a decay effect that deals damage to enemies which lasts for a few seconds or until the energy runs out. she is capable of also vanishing from sight for a few seconds, but this cannot be done constantly.
“one hand gives, the other takes away.”
