    history / personality

Lyra Belacqua grew up in two different worlds: that of a grand
Oxford college, and that of the neighboring streets. Orphaned as
an infant, Lyra's uncle had her welcomed into the prestigious
Jordan College to be raised and taught by various scholars and
servants. Of course, scholars rarely have time on their hands to
teach an inattentive child, so Lyra's education varies wildly and
is riddled with gaps. When she's not fidgeting through a lesson,
Lyra spends her idle time pulling pranks on servants, exploring
every inch of the campus, and waging war with the nearby
    street urchins.

This is how Lyra lives her half-wild life, exasperating servants at
the college, and slinging mud pies on the streets. Having
learned social graces from urchins instead of scholars, Lyra is a
brash, unruly child, never thinking to be polite unless
instructed to do so. She is quick to argue, fierce and stubborn
of her views. Her eagerness to fight has made her incredibly
brave—foolishly so—and though she lacks the physical
strength to pack a punch, she is agile and ruthless with her
teeth and nails. She also has quite the silver tongue, easily
able to convince her urchin friends of fantastical stories and
adventures. Though she certainly won't convince an adult of
these tales, Lyra's earnest way of speaking will get her out of
    most trouble with the scholars.

    pantalaimon

In Lyra's world, all human souls take the
tangible form of an animal, called a
    daemon. People and their daemons
    are inseparable, seen as one
identity; only a dead human is seen
    without their daemon, since
they cannot stray far from each
other. Children's daemons are able to
    change form to appear as any animal;
    once the human enters adulthood,
daemons eventually settle to one form.

    Pantalaimon is Lyra's daemon, oftentimes
acting as her voice of reason. He is much
more distrustful and cautious, being the
    more practical of the two.

He has not yet settled, but his most
common forms are an ermine, moth,
    and mouse.

A Ux O H T A
THExPEACEMAKER
firebender | twenty one years | male | bi

━━━━━━━━━━

POS xoptimistic, friendly, candid
NEGxnaive, indecisive, frail

━━━━━━━━━━

Books have been Hau's passion ever since he was barely old enough to read. Romantic tales of firebending princes,
of resourceful peasants in Ba Sing Se, of waterbender ghost stories; he relished in all the fantasies. The books that
most intrigued him, however, were those of the Air Nomads—he knew that when he was old enough, and richer,
he'd have to visit their many temples, and meet the acolytes, and see those bizarre and incredible flying bison. He
wished to travel the world, for that matter; but, at the time, he was merely ten, and had arithmetic homework
      to do.
Growing up in a merchant neighborhood, Hau had easy access to new books as they were published. It was around a
year after he decided to one day see the world that there was a very sudden, very obvious decline in new material
at his school library. He and his other bookish classmates pestered the poor librarian constantly, who knew exactly
what was happening, and said nothing about it. Eventually, new books came, and Hau was much too busy reading
voraciously to notice that these stories were all of the Fire Nation.
━━━━━━━━━━

After the many attacks on air temples across the globe, Hau became despondent. He kept his mouth shut about it,
because that was what his parents told him, but he was much too young to process the sudden change: the school
librarian had been abruptly replaced; classmates whispered of people they knew disappearing; and, the most jarring
thing: when did the Air Nomads gain such a large army? But if his new history teacher said so, it had to be true.
━━━━━━━━━━

Merely a week after his eighteenth birthday, Hau found himself drafted into the national army. He was shaken; he
only used firebending for preparing meals, and he had embarrassingly poor marks in physical education. Stumbling
out of his childhood town like a newborn, he made his way to the capital, where an intensive training program
kicked him into a little better shape. He learned to appear dull, to not catch the attention of higher-ups; he wanted
to appear as invisible as possible, serve his time, and return home to a quiet merchant life.
And yet, his efforts were in vain. On Hau's very first assignment to the Southern Water Tribe, he found himself
ushering a child away from the crossfire. He felt stupid, numb with cold, and, try as he might, he couldn't produce
a single flame. Spirits, he could've been tried for treason, imprisoned for life—but, somehow, his weak physicality
and dull performance earned him exile. As far as consequences go, he couldn't have fared better.
━━━━━━━━━━

Hau currently lives quietly in the Earth Kingdom as an assistant book repairer. It is, quite honestly, his ideal life; it
doesn't make much, but it's satisfying work. Yet, every once in a while, his conscious tugs at him, urging him to
do something to help the Earth Kingdom stop this already decade-long war. But an intense fear of his
homeland keeps him put; he only wishes he could go back in time, somehow, back to when he was ten and didn't
have a care in the world.
