at 28 years old, hallie is by far the oldest of two children, a full 12 years senior to her sister victoria. she is a psychiatrist, and graduated from oxford university with a PhD. she also, however, still lives at home. back in London, she occupied one half of the holmes' two-family flat, using it both as a home and an office to treat her patients. hallie has a very mysterious and aloof personality, and her mood can change very quickly and violently at any given time. she also tends to abuse her power as a psychiatrist to feed her morphine addiction, as she has full pharmaceutical access. hallie tends to be very cold and spiteful to her younger sister, whom she's not fond of. with everyone else, she typically comes across as bubbly but is, in actuality, very dark, and doesn't make a whole lot of sense half the time. faceclaim is liv tyler

Dr. David Holmes is an archaeological anthropologist and historian. He's extremely intelligent and well-read, and graduated from Oxford with a doctorate of archaeological anthropology and historical science, after which he was immediately offered a job as a scientist for the British museum in London, where he soon became director of several different projects involving artifact recovery and the study of ancient civilizations. However, reaching mid life and yearning to do something out of the ordinary, Nick impulsively decided to move his family overseas to L.A. when he received a new job offer from the natural history museum of Los Angeles county. Nick is all around a super chill guy, but he's a bit unsatisfied with how his life has turned out; his wife calls him a disappointment constantly, and while he loves his kids, one of his daughters is a basket case, and the other is a total recluse. He's a free spirit who loves adventure and hates the stale routine and domestic rigidness of married family life. so how does he cope? recreational drugs. nothing too heavy, but the man smokes a lot of pot and takes the occasional acid trip. victoria, 16, is the youngest child of two. her personality is somewhat quiet and unopinionated, as she doesn't really know how to express her feelings very well. although it's usually the younger child that gets all the attention, the opposite happened for victoria as hallie's troubled teenage years took up most of their parents' attention. this, perhaps, is why victoria is the more reserved of the two. she dances ballet a little bit for a hobby, and is very intelligent but doesn't do well at school, and got beat up in fights by girls at her old academy from time to time. She doesn't get on well with her overbearing mother, but often pines for the attention of her father, whom she adores and sees as a role model, despite his iffy lifestyle. she doesn't have any friends, since she's quiet almost all of the time at school and sees herself as too boring to attempt friendships with other people. faceclaim is emily didonato

Meredith Holmes, born Meredith James, is a 44-year old wife and a mother of two daughters. Due to Meredith's teenage pregnancy, she was forced to quit school, never going on to sixth form and instead attaining a GED. She did, however, graduate from college with a teaching degree and taught primary school for a number of years, followed by a few small business ventures that would later fail. Meredith comes across as outgoing and normal at first, but it doesn't take long to see the manic and overbearing personality shine through. While she isn't all bad, and is usually a pleasant person, she is extremely moody and will be upbeat one minute and manic or aggressive the next. While some of this is just her nature, she does have something of a drinking problem, which doesn't help. Meredith also has a very complicated relationship with each member of her family. She spends most of her time trying to win the attention of her oldest daughter, to get hallie to see her as a role model and come to her for motherly wisdom. Hallie, however, sees her mother as a desperate mess and doesn't take much of anything she says seriously. Meredith wants to be needed, essentially and is hurt by both the fact that she knows her husband doesn't truly love her, and also that her children are so self sufficient. Because Meredith is so infatuated with Hallie, Victoria tends to get ignored by her mother and spends most of her time doing household chores. Meredith sees Victoria as kind of a waste, as Victoria is very independent and also favors her father over her mother. Elizabeth James is the slightly younger sister of Meredith Holmes. She's beautiful, charming, and witty, and lives in london full time where she owns a small photography studio. She first met Nick in year 10 of high school when he moved from his home city of Las Vegas, Nevada to the farm county of Devon, England. It was as cliché as you can get- 'love at first sight' and everything. However, Meredith already had her sights set on Nick and, not wanting to challenge her very pushy (and very spiteful) sister, Elizabeth took a step back and began dating someone else. The following year, Meredith, then 16, discovered she was pregnant with Nick's child; that child would be hallie holmes, and the couple would later marry at the age of eighteen. Elizabeth is now single, and though she dates casually, she's never fallen in love with anyone else, but would never admit it. "Aunt Lizzie", as both the kids affectionately call her, typically only visits on Christmas and thanksgiving and tries to avoid being alone with Nick as much as possible. faceclaim is gillian anderson.
