╚══════════════════════════╝❝ once you give up, it's hard to try again. ❞
ryker was born in a small town of greenland.
he was born into a litter of five, and he had three older brothers and one younger sister. he was an average pup, but something about him was different. nobody knew what it was. well, except the fact that he was the only black and white puppy while his siblings were copper. it was something about him that was off. all of this was quickly forgotten when the pups began their training. his older brothers always picked on him and caused him to mess up multiple times. he almost got kicked out of the training program, but the trainer finally saw his brothers were the cause of ryker's mistakes. the trainer did his best to make ryker's brothers stop, but he ended up kicking out the two oldest before it stopped altogether. without having to worry about messing up, ryker soared to the top. at one and a half, he was already training with actual sled teams. though he wasn't old enough to be on a team, many mushers were already offering lots of money for him and telling his owner what they plan to do with him (diet, races, training, position). eventually, he got placed in a very well known team where he would eventually be the lead dog. many blue ribbons were given to the sled team in previous years, most of them from big races. all of this meant ryker would have big shoes (or paws...) to fill in, and everybody was watching to see if the musher had made the right decision in purchasing him.
the current lead dog was cocky, and didn't like the fact that a young dog like ryker was going to take his spot in a matter of months. he often tormented ryker. he bullied him by snapping at his paws and throwing him to the ground by either a body slam or by ryker's scruff. despite all of the pain, ryker never stopped and eventually was larger and stronger than the current lead dog. the lead dog stopped once he realized he couldn't take on ryker and often cowered away if he was nearby. many expected the young dog to start bullying the leader, but it never happened. he thought it was a waste of his time and energy and he would rather spend those two things training. when the time came, ryker rose to the lead dog position at the age of three.
over the next two years, he led the team to many victories. the lowest ranking they ever got was third, and that was ryker's first race. other than that, the team had gotten lots of blue and red ribbons (or gold & silver trophies), most of them being blue. he had received many names, two of the most popular being kaskae (meaning 'chief' in inuit) and suka (meaning 'fast' in inuit). many said he was going to be the next balto; but this was just a little joke going around. it seemed as if ryker's popularity was at it's peak- but that was definitely wrong.
on one unfortunate day, a race lead the teams across the top of a frozen lake. and this lake happened to be one of the biggest lakes in the area. ryker's team was almost across when he tripped over a decently sized chunk of kicked up ice. the fall was obviously unexpected, and the remainder of his team crashed on top of him. it took hours to untangle the bewildered dogs. ryker and his musher became the laughing stock of the town. their reputation was ruined, all because of one little chunk of frozen water. his musher didn't give ryker another chance. he shipped him off to the main part of the US as soon as possible without consulting anybody.
ryker was confused. nothing made sense to him and he became an introvert as soon as he stepped out of his crate and into a completely new place. he became depressed and longed for the snow collapsing from underneath him as he lead his team through the white and gray forests. despite his loss of appetite, he managed to keep his athletic build and eventually poked out of his protective barrier. he still wasn't quite the same as he was before, but it was better than nothing. ryker's owners always insisted on cuddling him and attempting to teach him how to play fetch. and once being a sled dog champion of almost a whole country, he wasn't used to being treated like an actual pet; and he often got irritated with the cooing and baby talk.
his owners left the door unlocked on accident one night, and it didn't take long for ryker to figure out how to open the door. the cold air nipped at his cheeks, bringing back memories- memories that blinded his train of thought. ryker raced off into the darkness without realizing what he was doing. he kept a steady- but very fast- pace and it didn't take long for him to get lost on the complete other side of the town. ever since, ryker has been a stray. he will never be as happy as he would be if he got to race again, but the content he feels is good enough.
