do you mean like dingbats? you can find those on some of the font sites on the main page (searching dingbats works). i prefer the ones on dafont myself.

i use them in gimp, and for that you can just make the default background transparent and save it as a png file. i dont know what youre editing it in, so i cant help with specifics.
