story; he's so tired.

it drags theo down almost as much as the rain does. he hasn't slept in almost three days and it's showing; his feet are painfully numb and drag through the icy rainwater, shoulders never uncurling from their exhausted hunch, eyes permanently half-lidded and trained on the ground. the rain is nonstop, pouring water in thick streams that fall from the sky, drenching his fur and chilling him to the bone. he's trembling, he realizes with a sort of detached concern. his pulse is erratic like shaking.

enough walking on his dead feet takes him back to town. nobody is outside, nobody ever is, so theo finds himself alone outside yet again. the buildings are huge hulking structures of stainless steel and opaque windows that only serve to block out the meager sunlight with long shadows that stretch across the pavement. he shudders when he passes under a shadow, the loss of light lowering the temperature even more, but relishes the lack of rain beating down on his already sopping wet fur.

It's with a jolt he sees the gap, the opening.

he makes his way toward it deliberately, tiredly, ready to leave the rain and hopefully curl up somewhere warm. the opening turns out to be a garage door, propped open by a cracked cinderblock and rusted. there's only a few minutes of consideration needed before his caution is pushed away by a frigid breeze, and with no hesitation he slides under the thin opening and blinks a few times to clear the initial blackness of entering a darker area.

he's instantly relieved that it's warm. there's a quiet rattling further in the room, presumably the source of the heat, but theo is so caught up in the lack of frigid wind and rainwater his general anxiety doesn't flare up at the sound. there are a few cans of paint and garden tools propped up against the wall next to a stack of something rectangular. he's concerned for a second, because this room obviously belongs to someone else, but he's so reluctant to leave the gentle warmth of this strange room he doesn't truly think of leaving.

it will be fine, he thinks, curling into a tight ball behind one of the paint stacks. he's still shivering, but it's abating. it's just for one night.
