Your favorite mythical creature and why: I would have to say a dragon is! I just fell head-over-heels for this Dailo, especially with how much it looks like a dragon. When I was little I saw the “How to Train your Dragon” movie and it lit the spark in my heart! Ever since then I’ve been drawing dragons! Heck, when I was little and we went to a restaurant with kids menus that had games, I would cover them in sketches of the dragons from the movie! So that’s why I love dragons. I can’t help but get giddy at the news of a new How to Train your Dragon movie coming out next spring in 2019!

Your favorite mythical creature and why: Griffins have to be my favorite; I'm obsessed with Greek mythology, so this creature spiked my interest immediately as a hybrid of two fiercest predators. The griffin is hailed as “the king of all creatures,” and it has the right personality for its title: noble, fearsome, and above all else, protective. With incredible strength, unfailing protective instincts, and a zero-tolerance policy against evil, it is the superhero of mythological creatures. No villain can mess with the griffin.

Story [100-1000 words]:
Things were dark. Damp, dark, hard and cold.

It was the way of the world, as echoes bounced off the stone walls, the dripping of water punctuated by the occasional cracking of stone as it chipped away and tumbled to the floor. The ecosystem, despite pinged in darkness, thrived; caves were homes, after all. Bats rooster above, insects and lizards scared the ground. Bones could he found, pieces here and there, as well as gouges that told once of a bear. The cave was deep, long trailing into the earth.

But tales brought visitors; climbers and delvers into the abyss. A light was supposedly seen deep within the caves, bright and blinding against the darkness. But of course, not a soul had been able to spy such a light. Until men came with drills and wagons, rails stamped into the ground and picks set into the stone. A mine was made. Tunneling deep into the cave, men hailed shining grey mineral out, silver, and soon more men came. More tunnels were dig into the mine, explosives creating larger and deeper paths.

And then the fear came; the light appeared, with angry noises and claws tapping against the stone furiously. A ghost some claimed, a beast that needed capturing others would argue. But the men still worked, avoiding venturing too far on their own, not straying after dark fell over the world above and outside of the cave. When the bats would fly, so would the miners. The light and the furious noises weren’t heard for many months again. The miners grew complabcent as they bled the mine dry.

And eventually, after the silver that could be found was taken, when the mine had run dry of valuable mineral, the mine was abandoned. The noise of their work stopped, the ecosystem rebuilt itself. And the light emerged, coming above ground with the moons rising path. Men near the open shaft were startled as they hiked along the trail left behind, black hide and glowing horn skating along the rocky walls that the old mine was set into. It’s eyes were fierce, it’s claws frightening, and the glow seemed to emanate from within, grow brighter as it growled and hissed like a fearsome alligator. It was fast, and as the men fled it descended back into the darkness of the mine.

Children soon came, daring one another to enter the mine, to see if they could spot the beast that flowed like the moon. None ever went far, too afraid of what may happen should it come out like the stories told. The stories faded, until a moonless night brought it out once more. Aged and moving slowly, two children and their father watched as it scratched its claws along the stone beneath its feet, eyes looking to the sky, then the flat expanse that had been trampbles years and years before.

“Papa, look!” One of children whispered, calling attention to the glowing beast. It’s glow was dim, eyes sharp but dull as it moved to watch them in turn. The man, having been flipping a coin in the air for his children to try and follow, dropped the silver coin. And the beast sniffed the air, stepping nervously toward them. The children were the first to catch on, the boy seeing the beast looking to the fallen coin beaneath their feet. He grabbed it and threw it to the reptile, watched as it was sniffed before being gobbled up quickly. And the light grew, became a shining beacon while the beast approached, seeming to beg for more.

“Papa, your silver! It’s hungry!” The boy chimed, giddy as he gripped his father’s pocket. The man hesitated before tossing more silver change from his pocket, watching as enraptured as his children while the silver was swallowed whole and the shining horn only brightened further. And with the brightness rising, the area was illuminated as well, startling a snake from its rest and drawing it nearer. The reptile pounced, grappling only momentarily before it devoured the other animal.

“Hungry indeed, but silver ain’t it’s food. Shines that horn, looks like.” The father spoke quietly. They watched as the night wore on, smaller animals of flesh being drawn in by the strange light only to be eaten swiftly. But the light faded slowly, until it was dim once more, the beast looking sated. “Lived in a silver mine, ate the silver to lure in food. Mines been dry for years though, I’m afraid.”

“But you’ve got silver, papa! We can feed it.” The children cried out, startling the beast briefly before it overcame any start and moved closer. It wrapped its tail around the man’s ankle, claws gently gripping his pants before it pressed its face fully into the fabric, a strange sort of humming vibrating through the contact. “Dunno how your ma will like this, but can’t say no to that.”

It is crazy.

How someone can be taken away from the world we know in one second; at the blink of an eye; at the drop of a tear. and how this changes you; how it hurts you; how it reinvents you.

I watched her take her last breaths, her consciousness readily slipping away from her. I held her pale, frail fingers in my palm. Its antarctica heat was ever so pleasant to me--it was comforting, warming, eletrifying. I listened to the electrodiagram start its rapid beeping, but I could not leave her. The room was suddenly encased in shouts and screams; I could not decipher whose scream it was --whether mine or yours--but that is how I felt at that moment. I resonated with the desolation laced within the sound, and that wretched feeling of irretrievability. I am a lost cause without her, a soul who prayers should not be wasted upon, for there is no saving me.

Rough hands on the staff pushed you and I out of the room, I felt a sharp breeze as they slammed the door shut. an aching sob left my lips, and I slumped down to the floor, squeezing my knees to my chest, permitting the streams to pool down my face. You timidly sat next to me, placing your soft hand on my cheek, gently wiping my tears away, almost afraid that if you were to make the wrong move, you would break me.

Words came floating out of my mouth about her. About the time we shared together, and how much I wish she were here with me now, allowing me to apologise for my every wrongdoing. It will haunt me perpetually knowing I waited too long to say the words at the tip of my tongue; that I did not ask for forgiveness; that she died, and the last words I uttered to her weak body were, "I hate you."

But I took solace in the system we developed, no words exchanged between us. I simply cry. You simply wipe. cry. wipe. cry. wipe.

It went on like this for a while until the doctor came out.

"We are very sorry for your loss." I broke own again, and your arms wrapped around me, hugging me to your chest. I feel the stares of those around me, pity makingup the pupils of the people in the faux-leather chairs. I don't want their pity; that won't bring her back. I doubt they understand what this feels like-- losing the person who means the world to you; the person who has been with you through thick and thin.

What the doctor did next took me by surprise, successfully breaking me out of my thoughts. Long arms encircled you and I, and we stood there, in the middle of the hallway, three people hugging.

Maybe I am losing my mind right here with my sweetheart and my doctor.
