Crestwood Estate purchased Gideon from a small, family-owned kennel in the summer of his two-year-old year; while his pedigree wasn't particularly impressive, nor his training, his jovial personality and prominent athleticism delighted his new owners. The breeder, an older man with a gentle hand and a sparkling eye, informed the buyers with a chuckle that the dog was quite good with kids. It became evident quickly what exactly that remark meant.
The breeder was not only a father, but a grandfather as well, and his three grandchildren delighted in visiting the small kennel and yard full of bouncing husky puppies. The younger granddaughter, in particular, was extremely fond of dogs; her parents simply couldn't keep one in their small apartment, so she often begged for the chance to visit her grandfather's house to play with her furry friends. On her ninth birthday, she received several books about dogs, including one or two manuals on dog training; her mother informed her with a laugh that perhaps Grandpa would let her help him train the puppies.
Gideon was the biggest and rowdiest of the breeder's spring litter, so of course the girl took a liking to him immediately. While he wasn't especially smart, he was quite food-motivated, and so he learned quite quickly to sit, lay down, and come when called. His favorite trick, though, was utterly adorable if not somewhat strange. The girl tried her very hardest to teach sweet Gideon to roll over, but he never quite made it further than his side; he'd lay flat as a pancake, stare at her eagerly, and thump his tail rapidly until he received his long-awaited treat.
Ever-hungry soul that he is, Gideon has taken to "performing" for anyone who approaches him; his trainers can't help but laugh when he scrambles to the ground at top speed and gives them the most expectant look possible. While the behavior could prove irritating in the harness, it's undeniably cute, especially in his gawky two-year-old frame. Of course, Crestwood Estate has extended a formal invitation to the breeder's granddaughter to come visit the facilities, and perhaps observe and assist with the training of the future sled dogs.
