You shake your head a little, hoping it was all in your head. ”I’ve been quite lonely here, all by myself. So if you sit and talk to me for a little while and tell me a story, I’ll give you a reward. Deal?” Nope, definitely not in your head. All you can do is not in your shock. ”yay!! Thank you! Can’t wait to hear your story!!”

Day: 2 Prompt: Tell me a story about how you met your first Walker. If you don’t have a Walker, tell me what you think your ideal Walker would look like. Story: Maelstrom It was chilly, frost still coating the fading grass underfoot even as noon approached. The sky was clear, furthering the cold aspects of falltime, and a slight breeze nearly bit through the thick jacket worn by Serris. She was a platinum blond, fair skinned with nary a freckle to be seen despite her love for working outdoors; she had left the relative warmth of her truck, face smiling in the crisp fall air, wisps left out of her braided hair fluttering when the breeze lifted. Her bright eyes, stark purple and a completed oddity, wandered around as she made her way through the parked trucks and trailers, cars and vans soon appearing the closer she was to the fairgrounds. It was a late fair, but with October soon to arrive Serris could only smile wider as the children dragged their parents to and fro, wanting to take rides on the ponies, the tractor or to get lost in the corn maze. Adults laughed alike, some bickering amongst each other not so quietly as Serris passed by, raising her hand in greeting to the entrance booth operator. She flashed her ticket, not needing to be held up by the growing line, and slipped into the crowd milling about the gateway as they decided what to do first. Serris has her destination in mind already, and she skirted around a few excited groups, arms outstretched as she avoided tripping over some children being set loose to enjoy themselves, chuckling before she was moving again. It took a few minutes to reach the area she was interested in, but soon the smells of hay, alfalfa, manure and musty earth; horses, as familiar to her as her face in the mirror. Serris inhaled as she entered the covered facility, doors on each end wide open. Small birds flit in and out, perching in the rafters and plucking away material to soften their nests for the oncoming winter. Serris ignored the birds, tuning out most of her surroundings as she looked at the horses in the stalls, some larger ones holding pairs. They were old, young, mothers and foals, yearling fillies and colts, some for show and others for sale.. She meandered slowly, lingering at those that were to be auctioned or outright sold. It took some minutes before she spotted one that really caught her eye; he was flashy, personality shining through to reveal he enjoyed attention more than much else. His feed bin was picked at, some grains still mixed with the alfalfa, but his nose was nudging the stall door vigorously, children passing by giggling as he snorted at them. This Stallion didn’t seem to mind any of the other horses around him, his bright eyes locked on the children and adults passing by instead, ears pricked forward in a focused manner. When the children outside moved away, Serris approached. The Stallion eagerly moved his head over the open hatch of the stall, rumbling as he sniffed at Serris, unconcerned. He was calmer though, in a way, and Serris came to the conclusion he simply liked the excitement that children brought into the mix. His head moved and he tried to reach the latch of the door, and Serris grinned with a chuckle. “Smart one, aren’t you?” She told the Stallion, rubbing the bridge of his long nose. She looked him over from the stall door, his russet brown coat shining with care, mane a faded straw color that had been comes through but was still tangled near the ends. His forelock was was trimmed and cropped close, leaving his handsome face in clear view. He shifted his hindquarters and Serris was attracted to the white rump, the Appaloosa markings fading softly into the rest of his coat, only broken up periodically by darker spots of varying size. From where she stood he looked sound, and his bright eyes told he felt sound himself; lifting the latch, spying the Stallion was indeed for sale, Serris closed it securely before working her way around the horse. He was thin legged, with a clearly athletic build that could be suited for many different disciplines. Picking up his feet, finding more trouble with the hind legs than the front, he sighed when she finished her inspection of his hooves and scratched along his spine on her way to his shoulders. “He’s a handful, fair warning, Serris.” A man leaned over the top of the stall, arms braces against the gate. “Good head on him though, eager to learn and a smooth ride.” “If that’s the case, why sell him?” Serris asked with a smile, moving to the older man and patting his arm. “He likes to get loose, gets into trouble. He’s a tease, too, riled up his sire yesterday morning enough that we weren’t able to keep him focused. Can’t keep having that. Plus he’s an extra mouth we can afford to let go of this season. You interested? Heard you were looking for some new blood to add to your ranch.” Serris smiled, patting the Stallion heartily as she pondered how much of a hassle he would really be, considering what her long time friend had said about him. “You think he’s worth my time, James?” Games chuckled deeply, shaking his head. “Any time you put in is always worth it, Serris. I didn’t teach you all I know just because you asked.” Serris smiled widely before she offered her hand. “Then I guess I’ll take him. Have your boys meet me out back in an hour with him?” Serris asked, shaking firmly when James settled his hand into her own. “Will do. Now get outta there and get some funnel cake. I’m sure Marc will need some incentive to be less of a grump when he sees you bringing home another of my boys.” James joked, opening the stall and closing it behind her quietly. (word count: 983) |
