Alma + Ventis
based on this drawing by mango sherbet
Name:
Ventis [Means winds in Latin] Distinctive markings: He's brownish-tan with lighter tan on his paws and left ear. He has cark gray-blue hair with lighter gray-blue streaks. A light blue spider web wraps around his left fore paw and above his left eye, and 5 light blue dots are placed around his right eye. He has tribal markings on his left shoulder, right flank, and the back of his neck. [They vary in shades of blue, form navy to light blue to dark gray-blue.] In your mind, how did they meet? Turing his head to look behind him, Ventis widened his eyes. The small group of bandits had suddenly tripled in size, numbering more than 50, at the least. Swearing under his breath, Ventis shook his blue hair out of his eyes and loped up a tree covered hill. Reaching the top, he chanced another glance behind him while still trotting forward. Smiling with satisfaction, he watched them yelp in pain as they stepped on the carefully laid thorn-vines that Ventis cleverly placed, which he had jumped over. As he turned to continue running, he checked on his small bag tied around his neck. Inside were the precious pearls that the bandits stole from the city no less than three hours ago. And now they were his. Suddenly, a wolf nearly half his size leaped in front of him and bared her teeth. Her bold, colorful markings and bright green hair stood out even more than her light-blue fur. She appeared to prepare herself to attack Ventis, before realizing there was a large group of bandits closing in on them. With surprising strength, she tugged on his paw and pulled him into a concealed hole in the ground, which seemed to appear out of nowhere. She led him into a spacious but cozy den, a large pile of food in a corner, a pile of leaves and fluff for her bed in another. Above the two wolves, many others paced the ground, trying to follow the scent of the disappearing wolves, but having no luck. A thick smell of herbs and other sharps spices kept tugging at their noses, the entire hill being covered with parsley, onion grass, mint, and basil. The largest of the bandits called out to the rest. "He took those pearls, and we will get them back. We can be patient. Very patient." Beneath them, Ventis could hear the low rumbling voice of the leader. Then the odd she-wolf spoke. "You can stay here if you want, for as long as you need. I'm assuming they're after you?" There was a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "I'm Alma, by the way." "I'm Ventis," he murmured back, eying the small den uncomfortably. It was large for her, but with two of them, it would be a snug fit when they lay down to sleep. Hoping silently to himself, he wished that he'd be out of there within a couple of hours. Little did he know that they'd stay there for the next month. Why do they fit together? While Alma is bold and open, Ventis has a slightly cooler and more logical mind, and is uneasy about opening up to other wolves. [Probably because he's a wanted thief. To the bandits at least. He only steals from them...] Alma gets him to be more open and caring, while Ventis looks out for her and makes sure she doesn't make any rash decisions. Is he a leader or a follower? He is neither. He is a loner. Which is why he became so closely bonded with Alma, he had never met any other wolf that cared so much about him, that willingly helped him. Other bits of personality: Besides being a loner, logical, and unsocial, Ventis is also very sly and sneaky, except with Alma. No matter how many times he's tried, he never seems to be able to keep anything secret from her. 'She must be too honest' he says, but Alma just says he's a terrible liar. And he also has an odd sense of humor, dry and sarcastic but still caring and warm. Only Alma has ever heard his jokes, as he is usually really serious. Worst fears, flaws, whatever: He's sometimes overly serious, so much that it's [apparently] funny to Alma. He also can't tell the difference between real kindness, and a trap, so he considers everything a trap. [Except Alma.] He's also deathly scared of large rivers. [Explained in history.] History: A small whimper filled his throat as Ventis watched water seep through the dirt floor of his family's den. He was only a little more than a month old, and he already felt death curling his fingers around his fragile thread of life. Only earlier that day, everything was normal, like it should've been. Almost normal. ~ "Rosae! Common!" Ventis leaped and pranced around the old, hollow tree that was their favorite playground. His sister, Rosae, struggled to keep up with his longs strides. Even among the large wolves of their tribe, Ventis was big for his age, but he could be as silent as the wind. Which was why he was named Ventis on his month-old naming ceremony. Finally reaching Ventis, Rosae slumped to the ground, panting as she watched him circle around her worriedly. He wasn't even out of breath. "Rosae! Look! There's a squirrel stuck in the tree!" Rosae leaped up and bounced to the tree were Ventis was standing. They watched a small squirrel quiver in fear as the two large, wet noses pushed into the log. But soon the two pups realized that wasn't the only thing that got the squirrel scared. There seemed the be some sort of lake in the tree! And it was growing. Pulling their noses from the hole in the tree, they looked around it and saw the river rising. They both panicked and began a stumbling run towards their den. "MOMMA! PAPA!" Rosae shouted. She was crying, but Ventis seemed to have calmed down a bit, though he was too scared to actually admit he was scared. He looked back at the river, still growing, and getting closer. Their parents hustled them into their den, both hoping it was high enough to escape the raging river. ~ And now, they were stuck. To walk out of their den would mean death. Swirling water that swept away anyone who dared to try its strength. To stay in their den was death. Before long, the water would flood their den entirely, and they'd be swept away. Ventis huddled with Rosae against their parent's warm bodies. They all felt the cold water creeping up towards them, first faint and now a large puddle on the floor. Within minutes, Ventis and Rosae were both on their parents backs, the water now coming up to the adult wolves' chests. Instead of panicking, they all calmed down and realized their fate. Closing their eyes, they sent a silent prayer that somehow they would survive, but in their hearts, they knew they had no chance against the raging waters. Ventis closed his eyes and breathed in the precious air that he knew would soon be ripped from him. For such a young pup, he understood a lot. They were going to drown, and he knew it. Rosae, on the other hand, was calming down after their mother soothed her and told her everything was alright. Watching his parents, Ventis noted that his father's muzzle was already wet before he dipped his head in the water for a drink of water. Realizing he was crying, Ventis, snuggled deeper into his father's neck and breathed his scent in deeply, hoping that the scent would be his last memory of life. Within a split second, Ventis and his family was whipped out of their den into the river. It had grown huge, and was flooding many other dens besides his. He watched as countless wolves felt their thick fur, already soaked in water, drag them down deep into the water. Swirling water wrapped around Ventis as he watched his sister float helplessly past him. He paddled furiously, but no matter how hard he tried, he got no where. Only seconds later he saw the deep red-brown fur of Rosae go under the surface of the river, and then he saw no more. ~ Ventis opened his eyes and found himself staring into the milky blue eyes of the local blind shaman of their tribe. Jumping back in terror, he felt his weak limbs fall with a thump back onto the leaf covered floor. Coughing miserably, he rolled into a sitting position and looked up at the shaman. "He- hello." He managed to stutter. The shaman only smiled and said "I knew you'd be alright." Suddenly, like a roaring waterfall, all the memories of that fateful day came crashing and tumbling back into his head. Distraught, Ventis hung his head and began sobbing, ignoring the shaman's hushing noises. Unfazed by the crying, the shaman explained to Ventis about how he got here. "You see, no sooner than a blink than you gone under did that tough wolf of your dad pull you back up. I doubt you remember, but you be hacking up water and blood, making a mess of things. Well, he dragged you right up to the bank, where then we pulled you into this little cave of mine. You've been in here out cold for nearly a month, kid!" Ventis looked up sharply. "My dad is still alive?" He asked in astonishment. The shaman blink. "I think so. He left a week ago to look for your mother and sister. He hasn't returned yet, but we---" "SIR!" A small black wolf with silver markings raced into the cave. "SIR! The wolf returns!" The shaman smiled briefly. "Well there you have it kid. Your dad's back." Ventis limped out of the cave, face glowing with anticipation--- only to find his father with his head down, staring at the two piles of sodden fur, one snow gray and green, the other much, much smaller, and red-brown with silver. His mother and sister. Both were not moving. Or breathing. They were dead. ~ Howling with grief, the large wolf folded his legs and fell to the ground, crying into his mate's fur. All of a sudden, he leaped up and began running, no one knew where, but it was in a general direction towards the mountains. The Mountains of Lost Souls. The grieving land for the ones who have lost their loved ones. Solitary loneliness. ~ "No! Dad! COME BACK!" Screamed Ventis. He watched as the brown fur disappeared into the distance. He was gone. Ventis stared at the horizon for a while longer, then turned around and began walking towards the forest, ignoring the protests of the other wolves. He no longer wanted any contact with them. It felt like the only bit of life left in him was gone, and now he was an empty shell. ~ Though only 2 months old, Ventis looked, and acted, much older than he really was. Throughout the forest, he saw the damage of the flood. Small mammals littered the floor, some dead while others looking for a home. Through the gossip from some blue jays, the water had left only a week ago. Trudging through mud and wet leaves, Ventis arrived at his old den. The river still wasn't its normal size, but it had become considerably smaller. He walked up to the edge, to look at his reflection, but suddenly it wasn't him anymore. He saw Rosae, his mom, his dad, and a foaming, swirling river. A current that picked them up, throwing them into a large, floating tree. Then dragging them under, until all he could see was the blank eyes of his sister. Tearing away from the water, Ventis lay panting on the ground, the horrifying images still running through his head. He laid his head in his paws, trying to get rid of the images, but they didn't leave. And neither did his new found fear of rivers. What would he do if she had fallen off a cliff and might be still alive, with the only way down off that cliff? He would panic. With the only wolf that he'd ever cared for now most possibly dead, he'd completely lose his mind and panic. He'd try to be logical and find a safe way down to find her, but he'd know that every second wasted might cost him her life. So he'd panic and jump after her. [By the way- Rosae means rose in Latin] |
