Oh it me.

As my signature states, I'm on the Autism spectrum. I was officially diagnosed earlier this year, but the signs were always there. Due to my lack of a diagnosis earlier in life, I never received the help I needed to make me, well, functional as an adult. The result is that I'm quite traumatized and don't really like people. I don't really talk to anyone in person unless they're a member of my family, or a friend. I mostly communicate through sounds and gestures.

I'm actually quite terrified of bees, wasps, and hornets. Loud noises used to cause me to break down in tears(fire drills in elementary were my personal hell), but now I just have a mild panic attack. I sleep in a chair in the living room because it makes me feel more secure(with the lights on because I'm afraid of the dark), completely under the covers no matter what time of year it is.

Despite all that I don't have any characters like me because I don't really want to. Having a character like me, one that's terrified of everyone because they never learned how to interact with people, upsets me somewhat. Being like this feels awful. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, fictional character or otherwise. I want my characters to be "normal" because I want to be "normal." I want to be able to express who I really want to be through my characters. That's why a lot of them are male, because I'm a man trapped in a woman's body. That's why they're more mature, because I'm not. That's why they're more social, more colorful, because they're everything I want to be, not everything that I am right now.

All that being said, I'm very grateful for this prompt. It allowed me to create a character that's closer to me than any other, and that means quite a lot, even if I'm not completely comfortable with B.B. here being as much of a trainwreck as I am. I hope my story helps people be more comfortable with opening up about their personal experiences with things like Autism, gender/sexual identity, ect. Y'all are valid and I love you.

I'm so glad you could use this as an outlet to tell your story. I am also autistic and I wasn't diagnosed until I was 19 (and I was told quite passively aggressively "I guess I will diagnose you based on what you say you feel"). My mom taught me to pretend to be normal, but that left me feeling caged and second-guessing everything I do. Most noises suck and I often fantasize about being deaf. Most of the time talking feelings like chewing barbed wire. So the prompt was pretty self-indulgent as well. I love seeing non-verbal characters and I have so many of them because it allows me to live out something I've always wanted for myself, to just give up on speaking entirely.

I try my best to look at my autism with a bit of pride. I am different, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong or bad. Sure, the sensory issues suck, but my personality, the way I interact with the world, the way I am socially isn't bad. I've had so many wonderful friends to support me, telling me that, sure, my lack of a filter is different than others, but they say that they like it. And I see other people like me and I hear their brutal honesty, and I'm grateful for it because they say what they mean.

I was told once that a world where autism was the norm wouldn't look so abnormal to us. That no one would see it as a disability because the world would be more tailored to us.

Of course, being traumatized definitely means that you probably need some therapy, and that's ok! Most people should get therapy, despite how normal they are. But it's ok to embrace who you are. The things you like are good, the things you don't like are fine to avoid. Bring a weighted blanket and a comfort stuffed animal to college if it makes you happy. Do what you need to feel happy and safe. The people who really matter won't be turned off by who you are.

I think the saddest part of all is that I did have a therapist who worked amazing with me. But not even a year later, he left, and I haven't been able to find someone compatible yet. I have an appointment to see a new counselor next month, but I have no idea if it will work out or not.

I know that feeling, bad therapists are a dime a dozen. My best therapist has been provided by my college, not even the one covered by my insurance. They are hard to find but I am sure that you will find one. Just dont be afraid to drop them after one session if they turn out to not be a good match. Many therapists can do more harm than good.
