year xx, day xx

We were driving home just like normal and the sky was covered in clouds that got progressively darker as we drove further. I carelessly joked that that dense cloud in the distance looked like it was slowly turning the sky into night, that it was like a virus eating away at it. we'd both laughed at that, but something stirred deep down in my gut, something made me feel unsettled.

little did we know that that one uneventful day would be the start of everything, the start of despair. the sky never returned to it's bright blues and blinding reds, it was always dark, dark, dark. but then the acid rains came, and brought along the era of disaster, when earthquakes and tsunamis, erupting volcanoes and hurricanes and tornadoes hit each country one after the other, with no time to prepare. the seasons had basically evaporated into nothing as they rapidly switched between drought inducing heat with wildfires and an overflow of rains, with so little being drinkable, and floods. each nation fell into a state of poverty as whole cities fell away into ruble and crops became tainted.

then the virus came, with how little we had, we had assumed the worst was over and were ready to try and restart but the world had other plans for us, and yet another large percentage of living things became something,, not human. the first symptom was feeling sluggish and a constant state of hunger, but that was normal, none of us had eaten or slept in days, too paranoid to try in case it was the last thing we'd ever do. soon after were the fevers, people started burning up then rapidly cooling, the fluctuating temperature was the fourth symptom. then half the population fell into a comatose-like state. for sixteen days and nights they slept dead to the world, but then people started waking up, their temperature stayed consistent and they looked better than we all had for days.

we'd celebrated too early though, because soon, little by little, changes became apparent and you could see them lose themselves to it, some turned ashy grey and flaky or an off green-ish color while others just rotted or shriveled up. those yet to wake up very rarely survived long enough to awaken. sure people with supernatural powers appeared but it was little use against those who were already dead, they can't feel pain, they can't die again.

it was too late when people began to figure out how to control their newfound abilities, a little over 15% of the population had survived this whole mess and most were heavily injured and barely hanging on. I won't lie to you and say that we'll be saved because this isn't a novel, there will never be a happy ending because this is life now. all you can do is pray and hope that one day this will end, that you'll live long enough to see the start of something, anything.

they say you never truly appreciate something until its gone,

I hear them at the door now, more insistent, it won't hold much longer I'm afraid but I've been lucky to make it this far, if you're reading this, thank you, because I fear that unless something has changed and humanity makes an unlikely comeback, I will be forgotten, just another one of the humans that died off.
