Eye berries are a delicacy like no other. They require specific growing conditions for optimal flavor and aesthetic value. Here is your basic guide to eye berries.

Flavor
Of course before you start your garden you'll like to know what you're growing will taste like. The good news is eye berries come in many flavors. As you might have guessed, it is based on the colors in the irises.
GREEN - green eyes have a subtle and sweet flavor much like a blueberry.
BLUE - blue eyes are more tart, but the sweetness is still there.
BROWN - brown eyes are bitter with very little sweetness to them.
AMBER - these eyes are more juicy than anything. they don't have much flavor by themselves, but when they are cooked they make a very good addition to salads.
Other colors have not yet been discovered, but we expect there are many more out there. Perhaps you will be the first to grow one!

The darker the eyes, the sweeter the flavor. Dark brown eyes are a popular favorite; when the bitter eyes are left to darken a bit, they are incredibly sweet. Children in particular love them. They are very hard to properly grow right, however. They also rot very soon after they get their incredible flavor. You won't be able to find dark browns in stores because of their ephemerality, so if you want some of your own.. you'll either have to find a local eye farmer or learn to grow your own. Expect to get a nasty bitter flavor the first few attempts you make.

Mutations
Most known mutations in the berries are safe to eat and some even enhance the flavor. Extra irises, lack of eyelashes, slit pupils, and lack of pupils are the most common. These hardly make a difference to the flavor and are just interesting to look at. It is suspected that eyes without pupils last longer and eyes without eyelashes rot faster.
Eyes with multicolored pupils often mix the flavors of the two colors. Sometimes they lack any flavor at all.

What do they need to grow?
Eye bushes don't do well in direct sunlight, this will make the eyes go misty or, as they are affectionately labeled by their farmers, blind. This makes them lose their juices and consequently much of their flavor. They need a bit of shade and lots of space. Often one eye will grow into two bushes, so make sure there is lots of space for extra bushes on all sides. They also require lots of water. Wild eyes were first discovered in areas with swampy ground. They grow okay in regular soil, but be sure to water them frequently.

What else?
Eye bushes benefit the rest of a garden because they function as a natural, edible scarecrow. Most predators don't like them and avoid the vicinity. Make sure that before consumption you remove the eyelashes. DO NOT WASH EYES BEFORE YOU EAT THEM. This gets rid of the juices that add to much of their flavor. Instead, let them sit over a tub for a bit. Their juices periodically drip off and are replaced, so they will clean themselves. Eyes are no longer good to eat when the iris has darkened so much that it is difficult to differentiate it from the pupil.
