Hey there,

OCs are pretty much just characters, like you would find in any fictional book or movie. In fact the word OC stands for Original Character, which simply means it is a unique character you created yourself! You just aren't a professional writer, so your characters haven't appeared in any stories (yet )

If you take any famous work of fiction, you could say the characters in the story are the author's OCs.

So, with that in mind, the answer to your question depends on how your religion views literature, and the nature of the characters themselves I suppose. But really OCs are just creative pieces of story telling! They can be great tools for people who have an interest in writing fiction.

I agree with what Burr said, but just to add purely on the non-religious side of things, you don't necessarily have to identify with them, and definitely not fully. Maybe they only share one thing in common with you but the rest is different, or they are nothing like you at all. I personally use my OCs as a way of exploring specific parts of myself, for example. one of my OCs is very bubbly and super optimistic, which I'm usually not like that, but they let me explore the parts of myself that are, even if they are usually buried. I have one OC that is literally just a personification of my anxiety and thats it. Its only one part of myself, but I can express it through that character.

Thats how I like to use mine anyway. So I don't see OCs as needing to be just like you or even share your gender. And though most of my characters have something in common with me, thats just how I choose to use them. They don't have to. I've seen plenty of users with character that are obviously nothing like them. The way I see it, the only requirement is that you enjoy having them and using them, whether that be drawing, writing, RPing, developing them in your head, or just having them there.
