“I guess, don’t get me wrong,” Kerry said, pawing at the ground. The wind whistled through her fur as she stared off into the distance, trying to find the words. Bos sat beside her, ever the patient mentor.

“Berry is my sibling, and always will be. I can’t resent him, and I don’t! I swear I don’t; he’s my brother, and I care about him. But I sometimes… Sometimes I feel like he doesn’t realize I’m not a kit anymore.”
She sat silent for a long moment after speaking, staring out over the horizon. A herd of bison moved across the horizon, and the wind brought their warm animal scent to the two cats.

As she watched the herd stretching out across the infinite plains, Kerry remembered a scene from her kithood, of the first time she had seen the herds. She had barely been old enough to walk from the den unsupervised, but had felt the hoofbeats thundering through the earth, stronger than her mother’s heartbeat. When she expressed a desire to go above ground, to see the source of the otherworldly feeling, it had been Berry who had taken her up and sat beside her as she watched the enormous creatures arrive to graze around them.

Just like it had been Berry who took her down to the stream for the first time, and had taught her how to cast a shadow on the flickering water to draw in the little silver fish. Or how he had rescued her from the same stream, when she inevitably leaned out too far over the water and fell in. Berry had taught her to swim after that, standing patiently in the cool water as she took her first tentative paddles.
The wind blew through her fur mimicking the memory of the water’s gentle current, and Kerry shook her head to return to the present, shaking aside the past like water droplets.

“What makes you say that you don’t think he knows you have passed kithood?” Bos asked, blinking slowly in their wise old way.

“Well, he… Every time I’m ready to go out hunting, he fusses over me like it’s the first time,” Kerry started, the tip of her tail twitching in half-remembered frustration. “He’s always quizzing me about what a hawk shadow looks like compared to a goose, or what a rattlesnake sounds like. I know these things, I’ve been hunting for a while now! I’m not a fresh kit out in the world anymore!”

“It sounds like Berry cares a lot about you.”

Kerry fell silent again. She hadn’t thought of it that way before; she had always taken her brother’s fussing to be the sign that he didn’t trust her on her own. That she wasn’t enough in his eyes. The thought that he was being so overbearing because he cared, rather than because he didn’t trust her to live her own life…

“What… What should I do?” she asked, turning to Bos with wide eyes.

“Perhaps the two of you should go hunting together,” they suggested with a smile. “It may help you both, and allow you to decide how to be friends and siblings with each other, now that you have left your kit days behind you.”

Kerry perked up, her tail twitching through the dry grass.
“I’ll… I’ll try that! Thank you!” she replied with excitement shining in her eyes. After bowing to the clowder leader, she trotted off into the grassland to find her brother. It certainly felt like the pair might have a lot to talk about…!

Oh, Cletus? Yeah, he’s bit of a goof, but thankfully I inherited the brains for the both of us. Great guy, but not the brightest...

One time our clowder tasked us to gather materials for a camp expansion, but I didn’t feel like digging up bushes and stuff so instead of doing my work, I started to play with two pieces of flint I found on the river bank, making little sparks as I hit them together. Suddenly Cletus comes around and demands to see what I was playing with. He kept whining like a baby, so I gave him those stupid rocks. Bless his heart, he believed that these rocks were magical until I explained him how they work. Because of this, I came up with a genius plan: we should sell these “magic rocks” to all the other idiots in exchange for building materials, so that we won’t have to do our share of the chores. Of course, I would do the business part, while Cletus would be my assistant who’d show off the stuff.

Soon enough, we managed to find other cats our age who were interested and we even managed to rip a few of them off, but one time my brother got a little too excited when we tried to show off our “magic goods” and hit the two flints together so hard, that a huge spark landed on a tuft of grass and started a fire… yikes! Long story short, we were no longer welcome there…

Since then, we’ve been traveling the world together, looking for new suckers to screw over and we’ve even added a few new tricks to our arsenal. In a way this change of lifestyle has made us grow even closer than before. Turns out, with a bit of practice, we can make a pretty dangerous duo. So yeah, we’re partners in crime.

Berry watched with drooping ears as his sister walked away. Why was she so upset? He'd only asked if she remembered what a rattlesnake sounded like! I mean, sure, this wasn't her first solo hunt and sure, Kerry knows that rattlesnakes are dangerous this time of year... But still! He has to make sure his baby sister stays safe! After all, that was his job as an older brother.

In fact, Berry thought back to when he first met Kerry. His mother had placed what seemed to be a small pile of black fluffy fur in front of him and said this was his baby sister. He didn't really understand the appeal until the pile of fluff stretched out and suddenly there were two large eyes staring up at him and calling him "Big Brother Berry." At that moment, Berry had sworn to be the best brother ever. To always be there to protect his sister and help her with anything.

He was the one to teach her to fish, and the one to save her from the water after she had fallen in. And yes, he may have been a bit anxious after rescuing her, but who wouldn't have been? She was so small, and sitting on the riverbank afterwards she was shivering and sniffling. Berry had to teach her to swim so that would never happen again. And ever since then, he's just done his best to make sure Kerry was never unprepared ever again.

But as he sat there, watching his sister play with the colony's newest kittens, correcting their pouncing stances, he wondered. Maybe... maybe he'd done his job. Kerry knew what she was doing. In fact, she was even teaching kittens how to be better hunters. Maybe Berry didn't need to be by her side at every minute, guarding against all danger. That didn't mean Kerry would no longer need him, but his baby sister wasn't exactly a baby anymore. Berry just has to figure out how to be a supportive older brother instead of the overbearing one he has been.

The rushing water bubbles white, droplets are flung out and onto your paws. Some even hit you in the face. You look at your face through the brief, distorted reflections the surface gives. "You miss her, don't you?" A voice speaks up from beside you, quiet as a ghost. You have to stop yourself from nodding, forcing down the instinct to agree.

"She made her choice, I made mine." You've repeated the phrase every time this question was asked, an old bandage over a sorely visible wound. But very few dare question you these days, they look the other way. You prefer that. And yet, you feel the gentle warmth and pressure of a head leaning against your shoulder.

No words are spoken, not for a while. The only sounds are the river sprinting along its path, the distant hoot of owls somewhere in the trees. And the very faint breathing of two cats, side by side.

"She could have been so much more..." You say, barely more than a whisper, the words strained. You're not used to saying them. You're met with silence, but you know they're still there. It's not a cold silence, it's warm. Welcoming. "She could have done better, so, so much better." Anger flares in you at the memory. "She should have done better.

"So stuck in tradition, so arrogant and full of pride. Why was it her at the top, why was she special? Even after every blunder I helped her clean up, every issue I helped her solve, I was still second. Worthless in the eyes of the clowder." It hurts, to say these words after so long. But it's like a flood, so difficult to stop once it begins. "And yet they all looked up to me! They came to me for help, too scare of the anger of our righteous leader. Too full of fear of the person said to help!"

There's a gentle shift in the cat next to you, reassuring you. You take a deep breath. "Her name was Shadow... But I was always the one stuck in hers. She said she appreciated my help, then took all the credit herself. So many asked me if I was any use! So many asked why I was nothing like my sister's shining example! It was exhausting, chasing a goal I could never reach. I tried. I tried so hard to reach it, though."

You sigh. "And she just tried to throw everyone away for the safety of kits who ended up dying anyway! So many died that didn't have to. We could have still been a prospering clowder if we had just left when it was first brought up. But no! Her decision had to be the right one! And look where that got us! Separated and so many innocent cats dead. Her selfishness... It's disgusting.

"But I still miss her. I still miss what we were, when we were kits with no cares, when we were working together ranks be damned. I miss what she was, not the monster she became. I never want to see her again, I fear if I do I will tear her apart with both words and claws."

Silence fell between you both, and yet you felt better. Maybe it was the fact that someone else knew who Shadow really was, or maybe it was just the act of talking about it. The river still churned beside your paws, occasionally distorting your reflection to where you'd have to look away. To where you look like her.
