It had been a dark night, cold and unforgiving in the wind that blew through the trees and across the grass. The young kit had been alone, and always had been alone for as long as they could walk. It was a strange thing, to live on your own when you barely could even open your eyes. He still couldn't open them in the sunlight, too bright, too powerful, it hurt to look at the world covered by sunlight. It was why he took to the night, and why it was so very nice to walk around in the horrid cold winds and the soft spots of moonlight.

He hadn't known what a smile was, he hadn't known what another cat had even looked like. Somehow he had made it so that he wandered in places where no other storkatten found themselves. He would find food, scraps of hunts from some other creature, he didn't have the knowledge to find out what kind of creature- but it wasn't like it mattered. What mattered was that he was fed, that he wasn't going hungry all on his lonesome despite the fact that he could not hunt for himself. Eventually, he'd find someone who would take him in, but that wouldn't happen for quite a bit. He would hide himself away during the day, when most were out and about, so unless he found another cat with both a kind heart and a nocturnal sleeping schedule, he'd be wandering on his own and learning from experience instead of another cat. It wasn't how it should be, but it was... well, what it was.

When you have nobody, your company becomes yourself, and the most important creature in the world is yourself. And therefor, it's very easy to know that the most important smile that this kitten has ever seen was... his own. Sure, he didn't know he was smiling, and he didn't know why the sides of his mouth perked up to show a grin upon his face. He was happy, due to the wind and the soft light and the water that he was looking down into.

He enjoyed looking at himself in the water, he enjoyed seeing his face. It reminded him that he was real, that he wasn't just some confused wandering entity with no body or presence. He had eyes to look at himself, though their color was indescribable- or perhaps it was just that he couldn't see the color in the dark. He had ears that flicked whenever a heavy gust of wind blew past him. He had fur that kept him warm despite the cold air. He had a nose, one that was sensitive to smells to the point where the kitten would grouch at times. And of course, he had a mouth, one that perked up when he was happy, one that fell when he was sad, and one that he could speak with given the chance. He smiled at himself in the water's reflection, and that smile he wore only made him happier.

"How long have you been standing there for, Five? You have to go home eventually" a blue chicoon about half the size of the black one was leaning against the doorway of the office space, watching Five standing staring out his window down onto the street below in the night. It was raining, his red umbrella sat at his side.
"I'm waiting" he said without directly answering his friend. He watched as the busy people bustled by without a care. They were running back and forth, driving here and there, no thoughts of anything than what lay ahead of them. Five twitched his ears a moment as he saw some clouds part for a brief moment before the sky was engulfed again.
"I don't know what's so important that you have to stand there gazing off into nowhere for two hours, what possibly you could be waiting for, but good luck with it. I'm heading home..."
"Kringle," Five didn't turn his gaze but he lifted a paw up, "be careful out there..."
Kringle started to walk out before he stopped.
"What are you waiting for anyways?" he asked.
No answer. He shrugged and left the chicoon alone in his office.
Five felt his eyes growing heavy, he felt tired. He wouldn't leave, though, wouldn't take his eyes off that street. He watched everything, anything. Nothing yet, but he waited.
Another hour past, he shifted uncomfortably in his spot and considered giving up.
"Nothing is happening... there's no point anymore" he sighed and started packing up his things at his desk.
Not a few minutes later, the sound of tires squealing across asphalt ripped through the air and pinched Five's eardrums painfully. He ran to the window, dropping everything as his belongings scattered to the floor. There outside, was a man dressed in bright red lifting a car off the ground. He threw it right as the driver managed to slide out safely. The man then lifted up the driver, cackling, and saying something indiscernible.
What are you waiting for anyways?
"My chance" Five put on a black mask and jumped out the window into the street below. He stared at the villain in the street as he dropped the driver upon Five's arrival.
"Little man, were you expecting me?"
Five grinned.
"I guess you could say that".
He lunged forward and the fight began.

“Oh.” The kit squeaked, looking down at the mangled mess of what used to be Cinnamon’s favourite necklace. Their paws and tail trembled as they took in what they’d just done. “Oh. Oh no. No no no no no.” The small cat began to look around in panic. Nobody else was in the nursery den except them. This was bad. This was really bad. They began to scrape the twine with its pieces of feathers and funny rocks into a pile, anxiously picking it up.

Cinnamon was going to be so angry. The kit looked from left to right once more, instinctually checking to see if any cat had witnessed their heinous deed. As a kit that had been abandoned at a young age by their colony, they had extreme trust issues and odd views of trust and relationships. Convinced they would be exiled if what they had done would be discovered, they turned and took off out the den to find a place to hide both themselves and the broken and stolen object.

When they finally found a place to hide, they sat as still and quiet as they could, ears straining for the noise of other cats approaching. A leaf twitched in the wind and they flinched hard, before settling still, doing their best but mostly failing to control their breathing.

Cinnamon entered the den with a mouse clamped in her jaws. “Look what I brought~” She cooed in her southern accent, tail flicking as she looked around the den. “Sweetheart?” The rosette tabby she-cat looked around with worry, lowering her head closer to the ground to search for the kit’s scent. They investigated the den for a bit, checking the entrance, exit and their nest before catching the kit’s scent and beginning to follow it. It led her to a bush behind the nursery’s outer wall, where she could hear soft sobs emanating from under the fronds and thick leaves. They used a paw to push the leaves aside curiously.

At the sound of approaching pawsteps, the kit began to cry, panicking. They flinched away when the white and orange paw appeared, prompting a worried twitch of the whiskers from Cinnie. “Why are you in there?” The she-cat asked gently, befuddled.

The kit could barely handle the pressure, still blubbering no matter how much the rosette tabby tried to soothe them. “I-I-I broke it!” They sobbed. “Please don’t kick me out, it was an accident, I swear!” Confused, Cinnie looked down to the kit’s feet to see the broken remains of her necklace. As soon as they put two and two together, she sighed gently, wrapping her tail around the kit and beginning to groom their forehead in an attempt to stop their crying. “Oh, sweetie.” She hummed.

The kit, face still rife with tears, looked up with animosity, preparing to see a face of annoyance or hatred glaring back at them. Instead, they saw a kind ginger muzzle that smiled gently at them. “What..?” They questioned softly, sniffling as their tears began to dissipate.

Cinnie didn’t know it at the time, but the smile that she directed at that kitten would later become known to them as the most important smile they’d ever seen. Why? Because it was the moment that Cinnie made them feel heard. Made them feel loved, made them feel special. The moment that they were reassured that it was all going to be okay.

“You’re not going to be exiled.” Cinnie told them, prompting a huge sigh of relief. She continued, “Everyone makes mistakes. Even big cats, not just lil’ kitties like you.”She continued talking, but the small kit was so overwhelmed with euphoria at the realisation that they would not be once more that they barely listened. “Though I don’t appreciate you trying to hide away instead of telling the truth… I understand the power of the feeling of fear.”

The kit, now much happier and energetic, was ready to return to the den. Despite this, they still expressed intense remorse for the accidental destruction of the necklace. So, to make ends meet, and because she really had loved that necklace, she suggested that she and they make a new one together. So they did.
