This wasn’t the first occasion Melodrama had used his magic as an excuse to get out of something.
But this time was a little different.
The problem was not that he did not want to go on this date… just that he was feeling overwhelmed by how nervous he was.
Melodrama could be described as… well… a little bit of a player. His excuses for break ups were often, “I’m a Virgo… I just don’t think we’re compatible.” And, “yeah, after looking at the charts I just don’t see this ending very well for us.”
However, this time he could tell he was falling deeply for this cat and it scared him a little.

As a young kit, he was treated differently by his peers, and it didn't matter what he did or how he acted. There was something fundamental that he was lacking. His intentions always seemed to fall short; he saw it in the way others could not maintain eye contact for long, the unease carried in their shoulders, and how none of them would come back for a second conversation willingly.

It hurt for a long time, and it was only when he had accepted the offer to join the Elder Council that it stopped aching. He had wasted his childhood wishing for a companion, and a good portion of his adulthood looking for a life partner before prioritizing mastering his magic instead.

The more he developed his magic and cultivated his strength, the less his loneliness bothered him. On the bad days, he would be pouring over tomes and records rather than laying in bed for hours on end. His appetite returned after his magic practice sessions with how his depleted magic reserves would be demanding sustenance. He even had become more social and he discovered in order to have an easier time in acquiring new tomes, records and equipment, others responded better when he looked freshly bathed and groomed.

If it weren't his magic, and the power he discovered within himself, his quality of life would not have been as good as it currently was.

Now, he was seen as respected member of the colony, and as soon as he came of age, he had been invited to join the Elder Council. Naturally he accepted and used his cultivate magic and knowledge to discover how the colony can better itself. He searched out meaning in the stars, tracked the changes in constellations and listened to the whispers from the world above.

He hadn't expected to be bowled to the ground by a larger tomcat as he hunted that evening - nor had Adikaius thought that he would run into someone with a companion. The scent marks on the territory's border had been so faint he had assumed it abandoned. After a quick scuffle, the three of them sat in a circle nursing small cuts. Adikaius had never been a weak storkie, and although he knew he would loose the fight, he was fairly certain that the other two had realized that trying to kill him for trespassing would leave them with some severe injuries. Instead of running, though, Adikaius had leapt out of the spotted tom's reach and sat down, curiously observing the two. Something about the way that the constellations were becoming brighter in the evening sky caught his attention in an odd way.

The silver and gold tomcat narrowed his eyes in amusement as he looked over the pretty yellow storkie and her spotted companion. "That's...interestin'," he mused quietly to them. His purple eyes glittered and he wrapped his tail around his paws neatly. The spotted storkie shuffled awkwardly under his searing gaze, looking like he wanted to continue his earlier howl for Adikaius to get off their land. Adikaius didn't care much about the spotted storkie - he was just another blood magician looking to add to his pile. The other one, though... the one who refused to look at him. She was fascinating, wasn't she? Her pink eyes were fixated firmly on the ground, and she had her head just so slightly lowered to keep attention away from herself, but his eyes couldn't help but drift back to her. She hadn't been involved in the fight at all, instead staying behind. They could've likely chased him off if they worked together. Adikaius had a sense for those who weren't quite...right in this world. Something about her cried out that she would shake their world to its core if she had the chance.

But since she never spoke, he had no idea as to what this could be.

Adikaius tipped his head up to the sky, squinting as he tried to see past the clouds. Although they shaded his ability to clearly view the night sky, his internal compass pointed to the celestial bodies he was looking for. This yellow cat's constellations...which ones called out to her? A bad idea to do in the middle of a fight, but he had hope that the spotted tom would take the bait. Adikaius got lucky.

"What's interesting?" The spotted storkie curled his lip. "Spit it out, starboy," he growls. Adikaius lazily looked back down to him and let his eyelids droop.

Adikaius chucked. Starboy...that was a new one. He liked it. "Well, Giv'r a Names, if ya woul' so please...join me 'n watchin' th'stars fer a moment?" He spoke slowly, a heavy twang drawling his words. "An' ya wanna giv' me a name, friend...? One fer you, this time."

The spotted storkie eyed him warily, then glanced to the yellow storkie, as if asking for permission. She gave him a small nod, and his gruff voice piped up again. "I'm Herman, and this one's Rem." Herman sits down with a small thump and sighs heavily. "You want me to do your sky mumbo jumbo, huh...you gonna concede after that?"

"Mmmaybe,~" Adikaius hummed.

"That'll have to be good enough...for now." Herman looks up at the sky. Adikaius looks up with him, a wisp of a smile on his face. He makes a small noncommittal noise as he traces where Herman's attention was drawn. Non-Astral storkies didn't have a sense for the locations of planets, but an Astral with some practice could generally figure out which planet currently held sway over their life by tracking what drew their eyes when they looked in a 'random' location. It was never really random - their planet would always gravitate their eyes towards it. It wasn't always accurate, but it was a quick and simple way to do minor readings for storkies you didn't know well.

Of course, this fool wasn't drawn to a planet. From a blood storkie with such an aggressive front, Adikaius had expected a very strong inclination for Mars. It was the most common ruler for bloods, as well as aggressive people. But not this one, apparently. Herman blinked heavily as the sun briefly blinded him. Adikaius' smile widened. The sun's major draw of ego wasn't entirely surprising for him, but the rest...that was something interesting to note. The immediate blinking signified a strong drawing to consciousness...and the refusal to look away even as tears sprung into his eyes? That was an unwavering power. Despite his pushover big-talk show...like his companion, there was something interesting about Herman too, once Adikaius looked closer. He'd have to keep an eye on these two.

Adikaius turned his head to the yellow storkie and flicked his tail. He casually lifted a paw and began to wash the seeping gash on his wrist, left by Herman's claws. It stung more than he'd like to admit. "Yer turn, dearest...take a look up at that sky fer me."

Rem flinched when he spoke to her and then glanced upwards, not lifting her head. Adikaius twitched his whiskers in amusement. Poor thing would probably be terrified of a mouse if it ran across her paws.

He felt ice freeze in his belly when he saw which planet had drawn her eyes. Adikaius looked at her planet, then back at her, before checking again.

No, there was no mistaking it. Her sway was Uranus, and the odd method of looking at it...rebellion. The inability to predict what happens. A change.

Adikaius' fangs glint in the setting sun's light as he grins. "Oh, now, now...isn' that somethin'..."

These two were exactly who he had been looking for.

"...How woul' you lov'ly pairin' like t'make a deal wi' th'devil?"

I love fantails because they are such cheerful and cheeky birds. Not once have I heard or seen one fly into a window, and I have seen them play with cats because they are so sure they cant be caught. They are insectivores so having one come into your house is great to get rid of flies, and you dont have to worry aboutt hem hurting themselves while they are at it (however, one entering your house is supposedly a bad omen). Their song is a common sound in my day to day life, but It reminds me such a cheerful flitting bird is near, yet one with brilliantly furious eyebrows.

Whisper is no stranger to time travel. For as long as he can remember he's been slipping in and out of time, poking his head in during interesting moments and hopping back into the In Between once it' s over. She isn't quite sure how she ended up in this situation- but every so often she gets hints at a life that wasn't stuck in a void of time. A whiff of rain here, the sound of rustling leaves there. But it's never long enough for them to remember home- just remaining in the back of their like a dream.

Currently Whisper enjoys pestering this rag-tag group of outlaws, making them miss their prey or perhaps just spooking them. One thing Whisper is sure of is that she has always loved scaring other cats. Her favorite to other is a rather mouse-brained grey tom with a rather large ego. It's always good to be humbled every now and again, isn't it?

Whisper doesn't mind not being able to go home- being an omnipresent being is much more fun than they could have imagined! Plus the In Between isn't as quiet as it used to be. Recently a flame colored cat has found itself in the In Between. Whether it was on purpose or on accident Whisper can't decern- but what he does know is that this flame colored cat is quite determined on leaving by any means necessary.
