Endless. The seas before the village seemed endless, uncharted waters that held secrets from even the most skilled adventurers, concealed among its dark depths, sealed away from prying eyes. And yet, those among the colony would set sail among it daily, save for the times when it was far too stormy to do so. It had once been a thought as to what laid upon the other side of this vast ocean - if anything. He wasn't sure if the tales had been true as a kitten, but now, after all that had come to pass...it was true.

There was another world out there and among that world laid those he once called friends...only now, they were deemed enemies, for they had been sent to the land of those who opposed them for many seasons, the ones who'd tore apart the village, leaving it in ruins, those who caused the waters to churn with a singular beat of their massive wings, flooding the land as if to hide that which they had already destroyed. And now, those he'd once loved had turned against him and those they swore loyalty to - which had led to their exile and ultimate doom.

At least...that was until he'd heard the rumors of a second kingdom. It stood alongside those massive reptilians and its inhabitants possessed magical abilities that few could fathom to exist. Though many simply pushed these rumors aside, without sparing a second thought concerning them, he couldn't bring himself to do so. For he wondered and hoped and believed - that those who dwelled many, many miles across the sea were his family and friends. Those who the village had forgotten, as if they ceased to exist.

Without much thought, he'd set sail for the unknown territory - for the land of the dragons was public knowledge. They were their enemies, after all and their location had been placed upon the various maps held by those in charge of war strategies and the like. He'd managed to snag one under the cover of darkness, alongside the supplies he'd need to make the journey. He'd done it all so quickly and yet...as the village faded from view, he began to become overwhelmed with guilt, regret and betrayal.

He knew that the moment the sun rose, there'd be chaos. Those he was closest to and those he didn't even know, would become restless in searching for him. They'd search for days and most likely integrate those he was closest to, in case there was anyone involved in his disappearance. But ultimately, they would find nothing and would deem him missing, mourning him as if he was dead. It stung, quite honestly, that he had decided to do such a selfish thing but at the same time, he couldn't stand the colony's leader. Something was clearly wrong with him and if his suspicions were right, the village's downfall would take place sooner rather than later.

And besides...he'd rather leave them if it meant seeing those he truly loved again. Surely, this was all just a misunderstanding and even if he could never return to his origins, he'd be among those he was comfortable with. Even if it pained him right now.

her mother had always called her nix. it meant night, she had said. a goddess of it, one who ruled the darkness.

nix hadnt felt like she ruled anything since the schism. she wasnt born in the colony, which will forever remain nameless in her heart, but she had been raised there. she was still barely more than a kit, old enough to be alone but only just so. nix had no memories from before living in that colony. having everything stripped away… she felt like her name no longer meant queen of the darkness. no, it carried the other meaning now. queen of nothing.

nix. an absence. that was all she felt as she padded sullenly through willows that used to make her feel so comforted. this land wasnt a place she wanted to stay any longer. it didnt feel safe. eyes watched from under bushes, monsters danced in the night…and she could still hear the screaming ringing in her head.

eventually, willows shifted to pines, and the ground turned soft with the fallen needles. the sharp scent was something new - something different. nix had never scented pine before, and the experience was enough to drag her from her melancholy thoughts for the time being.

she wandered the pine forest until the moon began to rise and night fell upon the woods. the hoot of an owl alerted nix to the fact that despite what her mother claimed, she was nothing to the creatures that came out under the stars. she would need shelter soon. shuffling through the needles did little except prick her nose, and nix sneezed at the sensation. a rustling sound nearby distracted her. was it prey? her stomach rumbled in response. despite the delicious pine smell, the needles weren’t going to soothe her belly.

a deeper, more acrid scent mingled with the pine. it wasnt prey - and it wasnt plant. nix paused, taking in the faint smell beneath the leaf mold. it smelled like… claws and snarling and flames bursting from an outstretched paw. it smelled like fire. her hackles raised. it was dark enough now that any source of fire should be visible, but she couldnt spot the tell tale glow of the blaze. this did nothing to calm her fears.

the wind scattered the pine needles at her feet, and with them came a small cloud of ashes. ashes? for ashes there would need to be a fire… but where was it? nix began to spin anxiously, looking this way and that for the source.

a warm pressure on her shoulders made her stop dead in her tracks. “now, now,” an unfamiliar voice hissed, their paw gently resting at the base of nix’s neck. “what does the small one want from this one?”

nix felt her voice dry up in her throat. the voice crackled like coals, and she was certain that if she looked at the speaker, their mouth would be flaking away like a burnt out log. she didn’t respond, her trembling giving away her fear.

“this one doesn’t enjoy being ignored. the small one should respond,” the flame-voice prodded, a light hiss in their tone.

“i- i…” nix stammered. she gulped and pressed her ears against her skull. “m-…momma? momma!” she couldnt stifle her panicked cry for help. nix knew her mother was nowhere near. she likely would never see her again. but this primal fear - the fear of this fire - drew out a panic that made her wish for nothing more but to curl up at her mothers side and never move again.

the stranger paused. “…this one did not realize the small one was a kitten. this one…” they hesitate, then remove their paw from nix’s back. the stranger circles around nix so that they can face her properly. they were a pure black storkie, barely visible in the darkness except for their smoldering flame colored eyes. when they spoke, smoke lazily floated out of their mouth. perhaps there really was a fire in their belly. “this one sees,” was all they said. nix whimpered quietly. “this one sees a frightened kitten… and while this one is the dark one,” something similar to a grin twisted onto their face, more tongue and gums than teeth. “this one would not leave a little one to die. is the small ones mother able to come?”

nix hesitantly shook her head, unsure of what she was getting into.

the dark one rested their tailtip across nix’s back, this time touching her in a soothing manner rather than a threatening one. “come, then, small one. the dark one has room in the dark one’s cave.”

“Who are they leaving behind to join your Colony?”

Diamond Falls was beautiful if you could find it. It was a place where the veil between the waking and dream world was thin, so most creatures only saw it in their slumber. The land was a frozen landscape, with glittering ice drops hanging from the trees that sparked like crystals in the sunlight. When the wind blew, there was a lovely tinkling sound akin to wind chimes. It was in the cave behind the frozen waterfall that Mother Cat chose to have her kits. After all, it was one of the safest spots she could find. Not many cats stayed near Diamond Falls for long, considering the bitter cold and the lack of food for anyone who didn’t have the magic to find and/or grow it themselves.

It was a nice place to grow up, if Moonflower had anything to say about it. She loved the music of the frozen land, the way she could run and slide across the ice, the soft snow she could jump into. She also loved the ‘secret’ tunnels she could create, that her and her siblings could play hide and seek in.

With the veil being thin as it was, her dreams were fun and whimsical. She could meet strangers and walk through their dreams, which meant even if some days in the waking world were boring, she could have fun in her sleepy fantasies. The nightmares stayed away, at least, while she was sleeping behind Diamond Falls.

Moonflower's siblings never seemed to appreciate Diamond Falls like she did. They grew bored of the ice and snow. Some days she crept up on them and heard them speaking about leaving. One brother, Hemlock, wanted to find a cat he had met in his dreams. The second brother, Nightshade, simply wanted to explore. Her third sibling, Lichen, didn’t seem to know what they wanted to do yet, just that they were not sure they wanted to stay. They knew that Moonflower was sensitive about the subject, so they tried to keep quiet around her. Hemlock tried to leave in the middle of the night, but Moonflower caught him and begged him to stay. So he did… and he was miserable. Hemlock eventually found a way to leave without her knowing. Nightshade never left. There was a tragic accident, where Nightshade was attacked by a terrible creature and did not survive.

It came to be that it was Moonflower, Lichen, and her mother left in the cave behind Diamond Falls. They all got along well, despite the grief of the two brothers leaving and passing away.

Moonflower would have lived the rest of her life in Diamond Falls if she could have. In fact, she never intended to leave, and she tried to go back after the incident, but somehow she could never find Diamond Falls again. What happened was that one night in a dream, she met a cat named Jinx. She continued to meet him in her dreams, because he was an interesting cat and he seemed to understand her. Jinx listened to her talk about Diamond Falls, and he seemed to like the area, as well. Jinx could shadow travel. He told her when he finished practicing him magic, he would meet her there. Maybe he didn’t mean for it to happen the way it did. Or maybe he was a trickster, and he lied to her all along. When the shadow portal appeared in the waking world, Moonflower excitedly ran to greet Jinx. She slipped… or maybe she was pushed? She saw Jinx, just for a moment, on the other side of the portal in Diamond Falls before it vanished and she was left in the mountains.

Before she could even get over her confusion, there were plants wrapping tightly around her, holding her in place as a calico colored cat with scars on their face approaching her, already puffed up and hissing. “Who are you?” They demanded.

Moonflower wanted to weep in confusion and fear. “I-I don’t… where am I? Where’s Jinx?”

Another cat approached. “Lay off, Phoenix. She looks like she just saw a ghost come out of the mist. Give her a minute, yeah?” Howl looked at her with sympathy. The cat called Phoenix huffed, but the plants fell away.
“Are you alright?” Howl asked. “Do you know where you are?”

“N-no.”
Where was Jinx? Her mother? Lichen? Why wasn’t she in Diamond Falls anymore?

Moonflower would always long for a place she could not find again, even in her dreams. She would always wonder what happened to those she left behind. And she would never sleep as soundly as she did in her home in Diamond Falls, for the Courage of the Clouds didn’t contain the same peaceful magic that allowed her to dream walk. Instead, she experienced nightmares for the first time.
