She tried to return the puppy to the breeder, who announced that they would be ready to accept Māhū back but were not willing to refund the money, as there was absolutely nothing wrong with her.

Having a hissy fit, the wife demanded that her husband take the dog and set it free somewhere. "She's uncivilized, send her to be in the wild, would you? That's where she belongs." Wiping a tear from his eye, the old man only nodded sadly and scooped Māhū up into his arms. They licked the tears from his cheek, neither knowing nor understanding what was to become of them. The old man drove for a long time, all the way to the next state, where his old friend from the army lived. Morgan was a person that was often misunderstood, one who had long hair and piercings and dressed sometimes in men's clothes and other times not. The old man felt in his heart that Morgan would understand Māhū, and felt that the two of them would be good for one another, because both of them didn't really fit into their gender roles in quite the same way that others did.

When the old man finally arrived at Morgan's doorstep, he suddenly paled, realizing he had forgotten to call before coming over. No matter, his wife would have had a fit about that too, and at any rate Morgan was retired and likely to be home at that hour. Time seemed to stand still as they waited at the door, the old man fretting his hands together and Māhū standing on their hind legs to peer in through the window. Finally Morgan arrived and the elderly gentleman explained the situation to him.

"Well, I can't say that I've expected to see you here. Not after that time I got thrown out of the dinner party..."

The old man covered his face with his hands, afraid he'd come all this way for nothing.

"But you know I couldn't let a fellow non-binary individual face this kind of persecution. You know what, I've been wanting a dog anyway, in fact, and I think that my new pal may be just the perfect companion." With that, Morgan took off their scarf and wrapped it around Māhū's neck to keep them warm. It smelled just right and looking into those kind eyes, free of any nitpicking or judgemental people, Māhū finally felt at home.

As for the old man, he was sad when he left and even sadder when he came home to a woman hooting and hollering about how long he'd been gone. Finally, he gave his wife an ultimatum: either open her mind and lose the attitude or get the heck out! It's still too soon to see what will become of that couple, but as for Māhū, they are loved more than ever.

I loves both entries a lot, but this story was so emotional and worked in the non-binary theme and current issues in such an interesting way! Congrats!
