the day started like any other. it was bright, sunny, and a slight breeze drifted through the trees. the red collie lifted his head and took in a deep breath. he paws shook slightly, as he seemed to be alight with nerves. the whisper of a mantra floated in the wind. “come on now, you can do this merlin.” he took a few more deep breaths before lowing his head, eyes focused intently on the horizon. merlin shifted from paw to paw, trying to shake whatever nerves were left in his system.

a loud cackle to his left shocked him out of his focus, “merl! get your legs moving before i make you!” the teasing words come from a chaotic bundle that could barely be described as ‘collie’. merlin rolled his eyes at his friend, a strained but genuine smile pulling at his maw. the nerves seemed to have reappeared at olio’s jest.

“oh shut it, oli, unless you want to jump again?” merlin was referring to the cliff in front of them, with a steady 10 foot drop to a calm river below. he and olio had arrived to the cliff side just a few hours ago. olio, the more daring one of the two, had already jumped a few times. but merlin couldn’t seem to gather the strength to do so. his companion continued to cackle at merlin’s fear of jumping. he scowled, teeth bared playfully, knowing that olio was just trying to distract him too.

the two fell into a silence, with nothing but the birds and the sound of water flowing to break it. the pause lasted for a minute, then two. three. before finally, finally, merlin sighed, “alright, lets get this over with, shall we?” he turned to look at olio, older male somehow getting more and more leaves tangled into his fur. he received another cackle as an answer, before being nudged closer to the edge. merlin trusted his friend, but he couldn’t help the nerves striking through his body, making his paws tremble slightly.

“don't’ worry merl! there ain’t nothin’ that can go wrong here. all ya gotta do, is jump in paws first!” olio reassured him. the black collie trotted next to merlin, lining up paws to paws. merlin felt him bump their hips together, an action used show support. “ill jump with ya, show you that theres nothin’ to fear, ya hear?” he glanced over to see olio smiling at him, and for once, the crazy look in his eyes were gone, showing that he was taking this seriously for merlin’s sake.

a deep breath, then another, and then, then, his paws were striking across the ground, in tandem with olio’s own. they pushed off the ledge, flying, soaring, reaching for the sun together. and then merlin was falling, quicker than olio’s jump. but he didn’t care, because he felt like he could do anything before diving into the waters. his paws hit the surface first, then quickly the water overtook him. once submerged, he paddled to the surface and gasped a breath of air. a few seconds later olio reappeared next to him. they stared at each other before bursting into laughter, giddy and high on the feeling of adrenaline.

merlin felt free, sure he still had the feeling of panic resting right beneath his fur, but he was free in those few moments of flying. he couldn’t believe he actually jumped, his heart racing in his chest. they drifted towards the bank, a few yards away from the jumping point. olio continued to cackle like the mad dog he is, merlin watching from the swallow water. he was happy, so very happy. and as they climbed the rocky path again, he felt that he had conquered the fear and nerves that riddled his body beforehand. merlin almost felt invincible at that moment.

Eldin grew up feeling like he was constantly holding his breath.

Something about the city crushed his lungs and made him feel dizzy, but he could never pinpoint what. The air of the city felt suffocating, the grime felt heavy in his fur and the human designs were starting to hurt his eyes. Life in the city felt like wading through a swamp with no sense of direction. He felt lost. The days blurred together like the lights of cars flying down the street.

It didn't take long for him to be picked up and adopted out, bouncing between homes but always ending up back in the shelter. A clean coat made no difference other than attracting attention. They'd say he was the prettiest collie they'd seen and taken home by various people with different plans, but the heavy feeling in his heart would remain, the tightness in his chest worsening. He'd laze about the house until he was returned for "not being a fit."

Until he arrived at CreekShadow Kennel, far away from the city. At first everything was the same and he hung his head as they groomed him, the fresh county air helping his curly fur bounce back to its natural look. He nooded politely in greeting as he met some of the other collies. A few different dogs tried reaching through to him but soon decided he'd benefit more from space.

As night fell, a grey collie trotted up to where he was lounging.

"Hey, I'm Nayru," she introduced in a soft voice.

"Eldin," he replied curtly, not bothering to lift his head from his paws.

"How are you finding CreekShadow? I know it can be a shock moving somewhere new," she continued with a small laugh to soften the mood. Eldin made no move to respond but watched her out of the corner of his eye as she shuffled her paws awkwardly.

She tried again. "I was born here myself so I've always been used to the other collies and how busy it gets, it won't take you long to settle. I can show you around if you like?"

Once again, she was met with silence. Eldin could tell she was a nice collie, smart and helpful, trying different approaches to lower his guard. It's not that he didn't want to talk to her, a lonely life had never been fun. But the pressure in his chest was like jaws around his lungs and he didn't have the breath to answer.

Nauru's ears perked up suddenly much to his dismay, as if she'd just figured out a a new trick. "I'd like to show you something, come on." When Eldin didn't make a move Nayru simple rolled her eyes and gave a more stren "Follow me."

Eldin shot her a glare and gave a small huff but rose to his paws regardless. He watched with budding curiousity as she glanced suspiciously around the dark compound. Seemingly satisfied she nodded to herself and whispered back at him. "Quick, and don't be seen!"

She took off at a low run, a herding coruch, and Eldin followed, red fur bouncing. They ran along the fence line until they were along a building wall, hidden in shadow. Without checking he was still with her, Nayru performed a menouver Eldin struggled to follow, leaping off a pile of clutter, the wall, and over the fence. Knowing he wasn't as nimble as the grey collie, Eldin used his strength to his advantage and used his shoulder to push a box closer to the fence before using that to join her on the other side.

Pausing on the other side to catch his breath he found his lungs felt numb. Nayru darted off between the trees that boarded this side of the fence and he pushed himself after her. He kept his eyes locked onto her white tail as if weaved between trunks and around bushes.

Finally, they broke through the trees and found themselves atop a grassy slope. Nayru slowed to a halt and sat down, looking back at Eldin expectently. Confused, he sat beside her.

"Look," she breathed, voice light. Turning his head to the view, the brown collie tilted his head. The grass fell down towards a river. There was another forest in the distance, but when scanning the landscape he couldn't spot anything special.

Huffing, he turned back to her. "What? You brought me out her to see some grass and water?"

Nayru let out a soft laugh and smiled. "Word in the kennel was you came from a city. So did my father. He passed through a city once but didn't stay long, it destroyed his mental health. He'd roam these hills for months before he met my mother and joined the kennel. I thought maybe you were suffering in the same way as him."

This did nothing to explain it and Eldin opening his mouth to question her, but she cut him off. "Look up," she urged.

Eldin tilted his head towards the sky.

Gone was the orange glow and the heavy, gritty air. Instead a blue-black sky took its place. Specks of light dusted it, twinkling brightly back at him. The sky wasn't pressing down on him, but calling him into its comforting embrace.

Stars.

He could finally breath.
