Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

The sun was lowering in the sky, vibrant oranges and wonderous splashes of pink and yellow fading into the darkness as it set on the horizon, dipping into deep blues and purples, reflected on the watery mirror below.

Peering down from the ledge she was perched on, Arashi gleamed in the approaching darkness, points on her body lit up with gorgeous blue bioluminescence. She stepped onto a rocky pathway, stairs that were naturally carved into its surface leading down to a wide expanse of glistening water. She stopped just short of the shore, looking down at the surface and tentatively dipping her paw into the cool liquid. One after another the rest of her paws followed until her body was fully submerged and she was swimming with a learned strength, down with the lamp in her mouth still lit, lighting the way under the water. She was able to hold her breath for quite a while after doing this trip so many times and was relatively relaxed in the water now, happy to stay a little longer and enjoy the refreshing feeling. Heading downwards a little longer, Arashi spotted what she was looking for, an underwater cave with some moss covering the edges of the entrance, a few vines of seaweed snaking through the water to hide it away from anyone who wasn't looking hard enough. Luckily for her, she had her lamp!

Diving and spiralling in glee she swam through the cave entrance and then started swimming upwards again until her head lightly bonked against the rocky ceiling and she was able to reach forward and find a foothold to pull herself out of the water, watching as it started dripping off her. The air surrounding her had turned almost humid, and she shook off the water on the lamp before continuing into the dimly-lit cave ahead, small glowing bundles of moss and little gleaming mushrooms on the floor helping her along her route. It wasn't long before a variety of large bushy plants appeared to be blocking her way... though that didn't stop her from walking through seemingly effortlessly. Bursting gracefully through the bushes onto the other side she stopped and took in the amazing view of her home, her personal little slice of paradise. The plants were lit up everywhere! From left to right there was such a wide variety of brightly glowing flowers and dimly lit trees that it was hard to figure out where to look! and if you looked very closely, you would be able to see a flash of vibrant colour dashing through the bushes here and there, many varieties of small and large animals mutated from years of living in here scattering at the sight of an intruder, their skin or fur now brightened with their own personal lanterns, embedded into their bodies in the form of bioluminescence.

Thankfully, Arashi had lived here for many years and was known very well by her animal companions, and was instead greeted by them as she followed a path she had marked out with subtly glowing blue painted pawprints on some of the trees and along the ground. She followed the path back to her personal home, a small but (for her) perfectly sized hut made of stone and wood, with little shells and candles and other knick-knacks that she had found outside her cave making it her favourite place to be. Her many run-ins with strangers and creatures out in the woods and past the sea were recorded on every shelf in her quaint little hut. Journals with recollections of her journeys were lined up on a neat shelf by a hammock inside the hut, for easy access reading when she felt like going back in time. She placed down her lamp on the ground by the door, and instead picked up a large seashell from one of her shelves, taking it outside to a small self-made pond and dipping it in to collect water in it before bringing it back inside to water her small succulents with, the three gleaming plants sitting on her windowsill. Sitting down and peering out the window, Arashi contentedly nodded to herself, placing the seashell back on the shelf it came from. This natural peace, with only the sounds of nature around her...

A home, with access to everything she could ever need, and reminders of all her adventures. What was better than that?

Rocky Mountain Mini Drafts #038 based on this drawing by Idem
by Idem @ Sun Aug 07, 2022 1:42 pm [Reply]

Image

This breed of mini drafts, a mix that was started between Haflingers and Icelandic Horses, was established in the early 1900s to assist in the development of roadways and hiking trails within Banff National Park up in Canada. Their broad chests and fluffy winter coat make living up in the cold Rockies bearable, and their densely muscled bodies make all the hard work they typically do possible for such a small breed of draft horse. Their size range varies, coming in around 13hh-15hh, with the tallest horses being only 15.0hh.

They tend to make a much better working horse rather than show horse and can often be used for carriage pulling and pulling farm equipment. They can still be ridden though despite being great working horses, and have retained the same unique gaits that Icelandic Horses are known for, the 'tölt' and 'skeið' gaits. They are typically hard working, easy going, and spirited horses, making for a great working or riding companion.

In recent years, the breed has come back into the spotlight after it had been more or less abandoned within the park and surrounding areas. Locals took it upon themselves to set up an event during the warmer months of the year to catch the wild horses, know as the "Summer Mini Round-Up". During the round-up, people from across the world can come and watch the horses parade through the main thoroughfare, making sure to keep an eye out on any horses they'd like to adopt after they've all been herded into the auction fields.

European Badger [E_ / EbgEbg | E_ / Ebgebg] (u) - This facial marking has both the dark face, ears, and throat as well as white stripes and ear tips that a European Badger has. In order for this marking to show, the horse has to be carrying at least one copy of black in its genotype (E_). This marking will go over dilutions and sooty, but under white markings.
