Eirian hated change.
They hated that dreadful, sinking feeling.
They felt doomed.
Everything was perfect. Eirian lived alone, surrounded by stone walls. Some may think this would feel, confining, but to Eirian, they felt free, they felt happy. The feeling of cold stone beneath their pawpads felt warming within, and the unique cave scent, almost like stale air, was refreshing. Nothing ever changed, everything was at peace, and Eirian was at home. They loved the feel of knobby stone brushing against their fur, every groove and notch was just a new discovery, but one they knew was there. It was perfect. Sometimes they would come across things new, crystals, or small animals, and it would send a chill down their spine. Sometimes, this would cause horrid thoughts to cross their mind, ones that made their fear of change feel too real. What if something more is down here, something dangerous. What if I have to leave one day. Quickly, they would shake off the feeling, and steady their breathing as they continued to walk through their beautiful home.
But, what if they were right.
What if they did have to leave.
What if there was something more,
something dangerous.
It was a day like all the others, Eirian woke up, and began to walk. The cave, their home, was endless. Every twist and turn was both the same, but also a wonderous discovery. Everything is the same. They continued to walk, but something felt... off. Everything felt off. The water was dripping, faster than usual. The walls felt closer. Everything felt, different. At first, Eirian sat down and tried to calm themself down, this had happened before, they were just overwhelmed. But, this time it was different. Things for once, were different. Change was happening, and Eirian was not prepared. Something else was in the cave with them. Then, they realised, the extra water dripping from the cielings, from around them, was not water at all. What they stepped in felt, slimy, their breath caught in their throat, and they started to hyperventilate. What's happening. Why now. Why ever. Let me live in peace, please. They tried to get ahold of themselves, but it was nearly impossible. They began to run, in what direction, not even they remember. But things got worse. The slime began to pile up more, it began to feel more, alive. But, it was too late for Eirian to turn back. They had already found the source. It was a monster. The monster was gigantic. It filled and pooled around almost a full room of the cave. It was made of a clear, almost green slick, slimy, gunky substance, and it was everywhere, and it was spreading. Eirian let out a sob, this was it. Not only would they not be able to live in their home anymore, they would die. The more they looked at the thing, the worse they felt. It was filled to the brim with almost anything and everything they could think of, but it was mostly crystals. I am made of crystals. Things got even worse when they realised, there was a charm inside of the horrendous thing. It can kill.
Eirian collapsed.
They were too scared,
it was time to give up,
but maybe there was hope,
maybe there was someone else.
Ariteus scanned the area. Where did it go. A monster had attacked their village, a village northwest of the caverns Eirian called home, and they had followed it, to avenge everything it had taken. To say sorry. Why did I have to bring that thing home. Why did I trust that idiotic trader. It was no pet, it was something horrible. They stifled a sob, as they carefully sat down, where did it go. They had followed its trail through the twist and turns of the cavern, but still, somehow lost it. They were surrounded by entrances and exits to the cave, and not knowing which was which, they were lost. That was when they heard something. It wasn't the monster, it sounded like... another charming. Their heartrate quickened, they strained their ears, and followed the sound that echoed through the cave. As they trudged through the cave, their breathing heavy, they realized, everything is beautiful in here. Quickly, they shook their head and erased that thought from their mind. They had to focus. And, so they did. It felt like hours, but it was moreso minutes, when they found the charming, collapsed on the floor, looking defeated, yet beautiful, and right infront of the charming, was the monster. Ariteus pounced foward. Using their claws, and a potion they had purchased before going after the monster, they tore it apart, they killed it. Most of the things within the monster disentigrated with the slime, but one thing was left, it was a crystal, a beautiful one, lit up by some warm, incandescent, mushrooms, in the shade of red.
Eirian felt another presence,
was this it?
Was this what would take them to the afterlife.
Quickly, they realised that was not the case.
It was another charming, they were saved.
Eirian sat up, and slowly opened their eyes. A charming stood ahead of them, where the monster had been. The charming was breathing heavily, and they looked.. griefstricken. The monster must have hurt them too, maybe someone they knew... The charming turned its head, and started to speak. "I'm sorry. This monster was my fault. It was so tiny, I thought it was... cute... It was not. It could have killed you. It almost killed my sister. It would have, but luckily she has two charms. I don't even know how it managed to steal one.-" The charming rambled on with apologies for what felt like forever, and Eirian listened. They nodded and already knew they had forgiven the charming. While it continued to talk, Eirian stood and began to walk towards it. They then locked eyes, and it faltered in it's words. "Are you okay? You havn't said anything." Eirian stopped, and struggled to say something. I don't like speaking. "I....... don't like... words.." they mumbled, straining to say it. The other charming smiled, and nodded, "Don't worry, you do not have to speak if you don't want to, I probably talk enough for the both of us, and I am really good at understanding what people are trying to say. I kind of have a problem and interrupt people sometimes. Though, could I know your name?" The other charming had brightened up very quickly, and it make Eirian smile. They looked up at the charming, and told them their name, Eirian. The other charming smiled once again, "That names beautiful. I am Ariteus! Once again, I am so sorry for causing this mess. Though it is really weird that theres a charming living in the caverns!" This was so strange, I... like this other charming, I feel happy, even happier then before, when there was no change. They had just nearly been murdered by a disgusting slimy monster, yet they felt so much joy. "Hey! If you want, you could come with me. I think it's time I leave my home, I have caused... a lot of trouble... and I need a new start anyway. I was going to travel northeast of here, maybe make my own home. I think it would be nice with you, I already really like you you seem so cool and you also look really cool!-" As Ariteus went on and on, Eirian thought. That would be a big change, almost one of the biggest changes they could ever think of, other than maybe dying, like I almost did. A feeling of anxiety crept through them, what if something goes wrong. What if I miss my home too much. What if I actually don't like Ariteus. They thought and thought, but they realized that maybe this change would be good, I don't remember the last time I was this happy... While knowing and understanding that they would have to work a lot with their anxiety, and they would have a lot of change to get used to, they looked up at Ariteus, and nodded. As Ariteus jumped into the air, very excited, Eirian looked down and picked up the crystal that the slime monster had left behind. It was beautiful, and they decided to keep it, to remind them of home. Ariteus saw this, and offered to put it in a travellers bag they had brought along with them, and then they navigated through the caves tunnels, and stepped into the surface.
The crystal changed colors.
From red, to green.
It was beautiful.
Maybe, some changes are good.
Eirian and Ariteus smiled at eachother,
and began to travel.
And through everything, Eirian would have their crystal,
one that changes because of different types of light,
