I jog down the stairs of the farmhouse at Blue Cliff. My phone buzzes. I check the notifications and see that it's a text from the rescue organization I contacted a few weeks back. Apparently they have a few Chry foals up for adoption. I run out to the car to begin the long drive to the rescue organization, a trailer in tow.

I arrive and hop from my truck at about midnight, luckily there are still several people working and I go and talk with one of them. They explain the situation, but I'm hardly listening. There's a little blue filly curled in the stall beyond the talker's shoulder, and I feel instantly attracted to her. I tap the employee politely and point to her, "I want to adopt her.". The woman glances at it and then gives me a surprised look, "That filly's tiny, malnourished, and sick. You sure you want her?" I nod firmly, "I've handled sick animals before." was my reply. I wander over to the filly and wince. She's tiny, small enough for me to hold in my arms, and she's obviously underweight. I pick her up and she squirms weakly in protest until I soothe her with a nicker. I let her smell my breath until she relaxes down, too tired to care anymore. I set her temporarily in the trailer while I fill out the paperwork required to adopt her. After I've finished, I layer blankets in the backseat of the truck and cuddle her into them alongside a bottle of Chry formula. We drive home.

I watch the filly in her stall. She's gained some weight and is looking healthier, but is incredibly skittish and shy around people. I've been spending a lot of time with her to help remedy this, standing in the stall with her, generally acting like a Chry mare. I've named her 'Wake of Devastation" AKA 'Iridescent' after a song that was on my playlist that we listened to together on the way home. She pricked her ears up and lifted her little head when it came on. She's learning to love me, nuzzling up to my abdomen when I bend down as if she expects to be able to nurse, sweet little thing. She notices me and wobbles up to her hooves with a little birdlike chirp. She does that every time she sees me at this point.

I take her halter from the hook outside her stall and slip it on. She's got a problem with both halters and lead ropes. I lead her around by using a finger hooked into the halter for a bit before I click the lead on and try to lead her that way. She plants her hoofs and shrieks like a bird. God, that hurt my ears. I try a different approach, I bring the lead around her little rump and lead her that way. The gentle pressure around her rump and my calm insistence and mare-like nudges gets her to trust my judgement. We repeat this process until she's able to trot along on the lead rope like she owns the place.
