Personality:Enjolras is a freedom fighter. He wants for all to be equal, and none to be above or below. He likes to talk, and make speeches about things like this, and he likes to debate too. He can be stubborn and is often very hard to persuade to change his mind. He enjoys debating, and enjoys making his points in a controlled and calm manner. However, he is quite good at managing to hurt people accidentally, due to the fact that he has next to no people skills whatsoever. Why he wears the horns: Enjolras was given the horns as a joke present from Grantaire, also known as R, when they were both teens. They did a secret Santa between him, Robespierre and Taire, and Grantaire ended up giving him the horns. Enjolras knew instantly who gave them to him, and confronted R. R simply shrugged and replied, "You used to like dinosaurs a lot- and maybe at a rally if someone gets annoyed at you, you could always ram them with the horns?" Ever since then, Enjolras has worn the horns to every speech he makes, and often wears them whenever he sees R.

I think I'll start with my day. I didn't really do that much. I finished a political speech to be read later this week, I started a femenism speech to be read at a rally coming up and I updated my social justice blog, with the details of my next passive organised speech, which is the day after tomorrow. I then had lunch, some excellent tomato soup, and went through my speech for the day after tomoriw to check it. After that, R dragged me shopping and bought me this dumb book...

R is an odd sort of Pimmie... I think we're friends, maybe but not like me and Robespierre, but I think he's rather a kind soul when he's not trying to aggravate my very existence. He has so much potential, and could go so far, if he wasn't such a cynic.

I guess this is where I end today? It feels incomplete but I guess that must be how it always feels. I mean, diaries document life, and life isn't over for me quite yet!!

The mare glanced at the icicles hanging on the snowed over pasture fence, and couldn't help but laugh at herself. The first time she had encountered an icicle had been five years ago, when she had been flown here from what the humans called California. There was nothing like the snow, ice, rain, and hail here in Colorado, and she had been very confused when she stepped out of the dark hold of the plane and into a small flurry of snow. She was scared and confused at the new world she had been brought into, but she was taken gently into a waiting trailer and driven off to her new stables. The three year old filly just watched as the flakes of white, fluffy snow rained down, their chill filling the air so much that even her blanket didn't protect her from the cold she wasn't used to. When they had finally arrived at the stables, Aurelia was extremely drowsy and as soon as she was in the warmth of her new stall, she was fast asleep.
When she woke in the morning, she was let out of her stall and into the now sunny and only slightly chilled pastures. That was where she met her first icicle. Curiously she had peered at the long, skinny, and glass looking thing hanging from the fence. The filly twisted her head and clamped down on it, expecting it to shatter. Only it didn't. It clung onto her tongue, its cold seeping into her mouth. With a squeal she bounded over to the water trough and shoved her nose in it, trying to get the clingy thing off her tongue. Her muzzle hit something hard instead of the water, though, and now Aurelia was even more confused. Where was the water? Did these horses eat their water? And so she brought her jaws over the cold substance and took a chunk out of the frozen water. Squealing, she leaped about, the coldness of the ice hurting her mouth, the solidness of it hurting her teeth. She spat out the chunk and then walked over to a stable hand, head hanging low, icicle still stuck to her tongue.

The sun was blistering, bearing down on the humble little stables. It was the middle of summer, the air itself seemed to be smoking, heat waves drifted over the top of pavement. Melisandre was inside, tucked in the safety of her stall. The inside of the barn offered little protection from the harshness of the outside, but at least the roof overhead offered some shade. There were a few fans running here and there, the whirling of their plastic blades tossing the heat around. Melisandre almost thought that was worse, having all that heat blown around. Of course she wasn't in any position to voice her complaints, she was just thankful that she was in the shade of her stall and not having to stand out in the pasture, dying from the heat.
Her owner was sitting on the floor of the stable by her stall, finishing off a sandwich and gently shaking the water bottle she had in her hand. There was a faint clicking sound of something inside the water hitting the plastic sides. Melisandre's ears perked and her nostrils flared with curiosity as she peered through the bars of her stall out at her owner. Hearing the sound of her horse's breath and the shuffle of hay from inside the stall, the girl looked up with a bit of a smile. She then jiggled her water bottle again and watched as the mare's ears flicked backwards for a second before pricking. The girl picked herself up off the ground and unscrewed the cap of the bottle, tucking it underneath one arm before fishing around in the bottle for something. Melisandre didn't know what she was doing, but she watched with careful interest. Her owner's hand emerged from the bottle, dripping with water and something shiny and square was between her fingers. It was glistening, like stars on a clear night. The girl moved her hand forward, shifting the square from her fingers to the palm of her hand. She extended it through the bars of the stall and smiled. Melisandre was, naturally, confused at first, her nostrils flaring as if trying to detect a trap. She trusted her owner, this girl, though, and extended her pink nose forward to ghost it over the square. Smelling it. It smelled like very little, so without much more hesitation she lapped the thing into her mouth. It melted almost instantly, cooling the insides of her mouth. It was water! Not much, but it definitely was. What a strange invention for humans to use. Putting cubes of solid water into liquid water for some indiscernible reason. What odd creatures they were. (440)

Aisling had always loved to imagine the "what if"s in life, the "maybe"s. She'd first thought of such things when she'd been but a weak-kneed foal, wondering where the horses who'd left the stables went. She asked her mother, who merely nosed at her and said with a sad smile, "I'm not sure, darling."

And so Aisling imagined it instead. She imagined that these horses did not go anywhere, precisely, but went sometime instead; maybe they were sent backwards or forwards to someone who needed them, or maybe they were willed away to a place that had no humans at all. She imagined that they lived in the thin line of forest running alongside the ranch, that they'd become the bears and the deer and the raccoons; she imagined that when the wolves howled it was them calling to one another, reminding the others that they were still in there somewhere, still themselves under a shaggy grey coat and gleaming yellow eyes.

She became fascinated with the woods and the animals that lurked within. She took to wriggling free from a small gap between fencing and exploring the trees for herself, to walking languidly among the bushes and berries with her head tipped back to spy sunlight among the branches. She became such a frequent visitor that the deer that lived there no longer feared her; that the little birds who so lovingly built nests and raised children did not stop their singing when she ran below. She loved what the forest offered her; freedom and imagination and wonderment. She loved having a secret from her mother.

One afternoon she squirmed free with the intention of finding a squirrel she had located a few days before. He'd been old, it seemed, stiff in his joints, and on the hunt for nuts. Aisling had located a tree that she thought might interest the fellow and so she set off with him in mind, paying little attention to her surroundings. Aisling had never gotten lost before; she'd always liked to think that each time something led her home.

The sun was setting and laying golds and purples along the ground and still she had not found the squirrel. She determined to turn back; she would not find him today, it seemed, and she would have to wait instead for another opportunity to sneak out. She went back the way she'd come, pausing to peruse a blackberry bush and when she'd walked for nearly an hour she'd still not found the fence. She was not worried, precisely. Aisling was a foal so wrapped up in her own head that she was rarely concerned with her well-being versus others. So she walked on, trotting when it became darker, running when the shadows chased at her heels like nipping dogs. When she finally found the fence she was so overjoyed that she was not careful when climbing through; and she fell into a thick pool of mud below, cooled by the dropping sun, hardened on the edges as the water retreated to the middle. When she stood, thick gobbets of mud clung to her coat. Much of her color had disappeared beneath the shadows and the guck and so she trudged back to her mother shivering, looking quite unlike herself.

Still, she was not worried. She walked with a smile, imagining that she herself had become something new, like those horses who had gone before her. Perhaps she was a bear, shaggy in her winter coat, the cooling mud nothing more than fur. Or perhaps she was something else altogether. Aisling had an amazing imagination, after all. She could be anything she could dream up.

Salted Dark Chocolate Cupcakes xXx
cupcakes;;
1 stick butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup coffee, lukewarm
chocolate ganache frosting
coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
frosting;;
18 ounces chopped dark chocolate
1 1/2 cups heavy cream



Place the chopped chocolate in a small heat-proof bowl.
Heat the cream in a small saucepan until it just reaches a boil. Remove from heat and immediately pour over the chocolate. Stir slowly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Let it cool until it reaches room temperature, about 1-2 hours. It will continue to thicken the longer it sets.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add in vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt until combined. Then in an additional separate bowl, stir together buttermilk and coffee. Add dry ingredients to creamed butter mixture alternately with buttermilk and coffee, beating well after each addition.
Fill paper-lined baking cups two-thirds full. Bake at 375° for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
Spoon or pipe the ganache onto the cupcakes. If the ganache is too thin for piping, you can transfer it to the bowl of a stand mixer and beat it on medium-high for 3-5 minutes until it reaches a better consistency for piping.
Sprinkle with sea salt.
Yields about two dozen cupcakes
