Did you really think this mare would be anything other than wild? She's not skittish by any means of the word, rather... she takes joy in causing problems for others. She's a rebel, a prankster of the worst type. It's not certain people or horses, either. It's everyone. You can be sure that if she sees you, here comes trouble.

It was a typical tuesday morning for Songbird Acres; stable hands and horses alike finishing breakfast before readying for the day's events. Today was a lazy day, you could say. There were no shows, and most of the horses were just being taken out for a trail ride or children's lessons. Me? Well I was taking one of the younger mares, Etch, out to stretch her legs after she'd been cooped up with her new foal.

Etch and I stayed with the other riders most of the way, though Etch was reluctant to get too close to any of them but her mother, Tex. Around the mile mark, when the others began to turn back, we kept going. The trail led off on a cliff overlooking the ocean and a beach populated by tourists. We never were able to get there, though.

A few yards from the cliff's edge, Etch began to act strange, stopping every few steps with her ears perked and chewing on the bit as if nervous. I tapped her sides with my heels, asking her to walk on out loud as well, but she refused to budge. Instead, she let out a nicker, and from the forest on our side, there was an answering one.

Now, my first thought was one of the other horses had gotten loose this morning when the hands opened the gates but... they would've alerted me immediately if that had happened. I ruled out a wild horse; there was just no way. But as we stood there and waited for the clopping hooves to come closer, I realized the shaggy off-white horse was indeed, wild. Well... of-white was an exaggeration. The mare was more like brown, though I could tell it was mostly dirt or scabs.

Now, this mare, this wild horse, did something I've never seen before. As Etch and I stood there, she just walked right on up and started to sniff at Etch, the saddle, my clothes, then gave me the most expectant look I've ever seen.

I always kept an extra rope halter and small lead on my saddle in case one of the horses had gotten loose, and now as I slipped the halter on the mare she seemed to be trying to help me. That was, until the halter and lead was successfully on. Once the knots were tied, the mare took off, almost pulling me with her. If Etch hadn't run with her we would've had an enormous problem. But as it were, Etch was able to keep up with the mare easily, and even helped with steering her down the trail back to the pasture, which both horses jumped the fence of easily.

Once in the pasture, the mare calmed down immediately, or at least she seemed to. Taking no chances, I switched to a larger lead rope and tied her up to one of the posts of the rain shelter. All the other horses, now back from their rides and lessons, approached her and were immediately scared off. The only one that stayed? Etch.

I made plans for the following day; naming, bathing, and getting a real halter on her. My grooms were terrified of her, and I realized I'd have to do it all myself. But... strangely that didn't bother me as much as it should.

His darkest secret is that he was a carriage horse for a Greek royal but he convinced the other horses in his team that he knew the way and ignored his driver and took the Greek royal to the edge of a cliff where he somehow managed to unattach his team and push the carriage off the cliff thus killing the Greek royal and his driver. This was because he was a trained horse owned by the Greek Mafia.

Wilx #21 - Everybody's Everything based on this drawing by buny
by pars* @ Mon Sep 07, 2015 3:01 pm [Reply]

----:: Main Thread ::----

What are Wilx?
The Wilx (singular: Wilx) are a vaguely canid species found high up in mountainous areas in the wild. As a result, they have evolved to have several physical adaptations for their climates, including thick fur, large lungs, long flexible bodies and tails, heightened senses and their most noticble feature, their humanoid front paws for better climbing. Wilx have awful vision though, and depend on the thick patches of whisker-like fur on their cheeks to judge distance. Domesticated Wilx come in a great variety of colors and sizes, and are popular for companionship, hunting, home protection due to their heightened physical senses and strong tendency to bond with their human owners. Wilx are about as intelligent as a well trained border collie, and respond very well to human commands.
Wilx are scavengers, and will eat just about everything that they can get their paws on! Wilx owners should watch out for clams, rhubarb and some apple species, which seem to be very common allergens with Wilx.

The rarity of a Wilx is mainly determined by their pupil shape and genetic traits. Common pupils are round, uncommon cat's eyes and rare are horizontal. A round pupiled wilx may be uncommon based on the severity of their line edits and how common those edits may be.

Some people believe in urban legends. Others don't.
Me? Ha. Well... I pick and choose as to when I want to believe something. And the Red Mare was one of them.

Ever since I was a child, it had been rumored all over the county that there was a red and white mare who roamed, and there had never been a person who had been able to catch her yet, or even come close to it. Father said he had seen her multiple times before outside the fences of our pastures, and once or twice noticed her around our horses, but once he glanced back again, she was gone.
Eventually, as I grew into my teenage years, I started to have the wish to find this "Red Mare" for myself. My eyes had never lain on her before, so I didn't quite what I was looking for, so it was almost like a gunshot in the dark. I chose the one day I never expected to find her anywhere to go begin hunting... 9/11.
My mother had passed in the collapsing of the Twin Towers, and every time the day rolled around to mark another anniversary, the pain seemed to still be there, but it hurt a little less every time. I chose the 13th anniversary of her death to go hunt because it was something we would do anyways on her birthday; go ride around the mountains looking for another horse to add to our barn.

I rub Cigar's neck softly, whispering quietly. "Ready to go boy?" The stud snorts and tosses his head softly, shaking down. It was early, about 5 am if I were to guess. He flicked his ears a little and glanced back with his gorgeous blue eyes, swinging his tail around to flick me softly. I had owned Cigar from the moment he was born, and almost bonded with him instantly. He seemed to be like a brother to me... but a horse. He had always been there to listen to my problems silently and made me laugh when I needed it. The painted grullo stallion snorted, stamping a back hoof impatiently.
"Okay! Okay. We'll get going." I said as I clambered into the saddle, taking the reins in my hands almost instantly, allowing him to start forward out of the barn on his own, feeling his body sway slightly beneath me with each powerful step. For his breed, he was a rather large boy, but I never complained. I clicked my tongue, pushing him into a gallop as we headed down the slope of the drive and out into the fields of the Rockies.
We ran the wilderness for a while, seemingly lost, but not due to my GPS of a mind. About 2 and a half hours of searching around, Cigar stops almost instantly in his tracks, snapping his head up and flicking his ears forward, something catching his attention.
"What is it, boy?" I whisper softly, my eyes following his. A soft gasp caught my throat once I saw what he was looking at.
A red dun and white mare stood just a few meters away, enough for me to toss a stone over and hit her in the hindquarters. Cigar remained as silent as a mouse, his eyes on her intensely. The other horse lifted her head slowly, finishing munching on the last mouthful of grass she had just nibbled up, her gaze directed towards me and my stud. I rub my steed's neck softly, gently patting. "It's okay... We're gonna get her..." I murmur lowly, watching her every cautious movement. The Red Mare slowly lowers her head back down to graze, giving me enough time to unroll my lasso a little.
I quietly cluck my tongue, Cigar taking slow steps forward to the mare. I pick up the rope above my head, hopefully gaining enough speed and momentum in the swing to snatch her up before she spooked and took off. I toss the rope forward, managing to get it over her head as it came up, pulling it tight quickly and looping it around the saddle horn. Cigar planted his feet firmly into the soil, the painted mare rearing up on her hind legs to toss her head around. After a few moments, she quickly realized that she couldn't get out of it, Cigar turning back towards home, the mare putting up a slight fight as he had to pull harder against her time and time again to get her to follow.
I look over my shoulder at the wild mare, smiling a little to myself. I wanted to name her after both the day mother passed and the love of my life. We eventually get closer to home and I manage to get her to our side, reaching out to graze my fingers along her cheek.
"Alyx... I'll name you Alyx." I murmur tenderly to the mare with whites in her eyes. She snorted and lowered her head as we walked towards the farm, following us slowly. We eventually made it, allowing me to release her into the round paddock alone, giving her time to herself. I untack Cigar a little bit after, smiling as I hear Cigar whinny back to Alyx's calls. I look back over my shoulder out of the barn, smiling, still letting it sink in that I had caught the urban legend of the county.
"Welcome home."

cowgirlchrista @ Tue Aug 18, 2015 2:20 am

It was a week after Alyx had first come to her new home here at Harlequinn. She had quickly gained friends, slowly adapting to the new environment.
Every morning I came out to feed everyone, she'd meet me at the stall door or the fence gate to see what I had brought her that visit. She was quite curious for her kind, and quite personally, nobody thought she would get used to the routine of the farm so quickly.

Alyx spent most of her time alone in the paddock, or round pen, but was always close to another horse or another group of horses. We kept her separated for simple reasons of trying to keep one another hurting each other of course, but allowed her to socialize during the time she took to settle in. Next week was time to get to work with her, and I was quite nervous.
I named the mare HW Legacy of A Murder, hoping to put the little bit of a memory I had of my mother back into the barn, like we all needed. My mother ran the barn, usually helping do some clinic or train a new yearling or train for another show. Horses were her life.
I walk out to the paddock, watching Alyx run around aimlessly, kicking her heels up and neighing or whinnying every now and then. She was spunky and special, and that was something we needed.
I smile, so many emotions rushing towards me at once. "You're the one." I murmur, smiling.

Delilah 'Del' Archer was nervous as she drove her large pickup truck down the gravel road with her trailer being pulled behind her. It had been years since she had owned a horse, but often helped out at her sister's large ranch and other places. Her own barn had sat empty for a long time. But everything changed when she was scanning the newspaper and ran across a banner saying "Tolter Taming Event" and a small description, along with a phone number and an address. It advertised a large group of untrained horses, tolters, at Bear Run Equestrian Center. It was like a sign, as Delilah had been wanting a horse for a while, yet never finding the right chance.

So, after hours of cleaning up the barn and pastures and fences with some helping hands, as well as buying tons of supplies, Del was on her way to the large farm. She was surprised at its size, and impressed. She was directed by some signs, and found herself standing at a table with another woman across from her. "Are you here for the Tolter Taming Event?" The lady asked, and she nodded in reply. "Do you have your paperwork filled out?" Delilah oncemore nodded and handed her a large stack of papers. "Great! We have designated this barn and some of the pastures for the tolters you may choose, so feel free to walk around and look. When you find the right horse, please call to one of our staff members to check them tolter off the list and help you."

"Thanks," Del said, scooting past the table and surveying the area. She walked along the aisles of stalls that stretched on and on. Delilah went through the entire barn, gently stroking some horses and speaking to others, yet never making the right connection. She finally found herself outside, and saw many more tolters in the pastures. Some came up to her, others were very standoffish. And then, there, a horse caught her eye. They seemed different.

In a small field there was a mare, completely alone. Delilah found her intriguing and beautiful. When the mare spotted Del, she turned towards her and stared at her with violet eyes that seemed to glitter. Unlike other horses, the mare did not come to her nor stay stuck in her place. Instead, the mare took a few curious steps, as though trying to figure Delilah out as she was doing to the mare. Eventually Del turned away and found a young man. "Sir? Could you tell me about that horse?" She pointed to the lone mare.

"Ah, of course. That mare has a bit of an attitude. She doesn't seem to like the other tolters and is very cautious. Very watchful of the women, we think it has something to do with her past." The man looks at the mare with speculation.

"Is that so? Well, I think we'll have to change that. I will take her." Delilah smiled to him. Without asking, she then opened the pasture gate and began to walk to the mare. The horse raised her beautiful head high and went rigid momentarily, snorting as though offended, and eventually taking some small steps backwards. "Woah, girl. Shh." Del paused, putting her hands up calmly. The mare lowered her head slightly. Delilah advanced slightly, keeping her hands in the tolter's view.

The mare took in some sharp breaths, keeping a close eye on Del as she came closer. Her violet eyes glittered with warning and slight fear. When she was close enough, Delilah lowered her hands and gently offered it out to the mare, who was still for many seconds, and then finally sniffed at Del quickly. She took one step forward. Delilah took this as an invitation, and placed her hand ever-so-gently over one of the mare's overo patches on her neck. The mare locked eyes with Del, yet did nothing, and they stood for a while, watching each other with equal interest.

Arrows @ Tue Jun 23, 2015 8:22 am

    Image
Delilah sighed as she reached her ranch, pulling up to the barn. The mare had been awful to get on the trailer. It took herself and two other people just to get her on, and to do so they had to practically push her inside. She supposed it was something to work for. With a grumble, Del got out of her truck and walked to the trailer. She opened to large doors, and there, staring at her from the second slot in a 4 horse slant load trailer, was the mare, her violet eyes aflame. Delilah was indeed intimidated, but didn't dare back down. She confidently entered the trailer and opened up the slot, taking hold of the rope around the mare's neck - was it mentioned that she didn't dare allow a halter on her head?

You might expect a horse with only a rope around her neck to take a chance to get away, yet the mare did nothing. She welcomed it almost. Perhaps it was much better to her than a halter. Del backed the mare out of the trailer, nearly losing a hold when she suddenly jerked back and hurried off the trailer. Surprising both of them, the mare pulled away. "Easy there, girl." She gently tugged the rope, and the violet eyes turned on her.

They made their way to the barn, the mare keeping her distance from Delilah as much as possible. They walked past multiple empty stalls until she pulled the mare towards a clean stall with fresh hay and water in it. She released the mare and closed the door. The mare paced the stall for a while, pawing the ground and sniffing every corner, blowing around sawdust. She didn't eat anything for a while. Delilah sat a few feet away, reading a novel and keeping an eye on the horse. Eventually, the tolter lowered her head and ate a few bites of the hay. This seemed to remind her of her hunger, and she began to eat more quickly. Del smiled.

Later in the day, after the mare seemed to have settled down, Del secured the rope around her neck again and directed the mare to the green grass pasture. She seemed to get more and more anxious as they neared the large space, beginning to prance. As soon as Delilah released her, the mare burst away, galloping off and then galloping back towards her. She took a flying leap and kicked out her back legs, and trotted about a while before calming down and beginning to chomp on some grass near the gate. All the while, Del just smiled slightly.

"It appears you might have some hidden talent there..." Delilah trailed off, considering the mare and her personality. "Velia." She finally said, and the mare raised her head ever so slightly at the name. Velia it was.

1) First Encounter

They milled about in the pens as she watched. Blacks, bays, dapples and greys. Mares, stallions, geldings. Young and old alike, horses gathered from far and wide. It was a bit mind boggling when put into perspective like that, because otherwise it seemed as though just a bunch of horses separated into groups of fours and fives. They didn't seem wild, not right now. No, munching on their hay, sipping at the water troughs, they seemed just like any other horse. Of course, despite the people on the other side of the bars, no one was really bothering the tolters. No one was poking, prodding, or just generally annoying them. The only humans allowed into the pens were the BLM workers and a few qualified volunteers, which didn't include her. No, her job was darting out to the pens and marking off the numbers as horses were adopted, helping ensure no one accidently adopted the same horse as someone else. She was young, and thus, inexperienced. No one wanted to see her hurt, so here she was. Not hauling hay or filling troughs, and certainly not helping chase adopted horses into a middle chute of sorts, shepherding them towards a waiting trailer.

Like now, the grey mare from Colorado she'd just marked off clashing, and clanged, and slamming into the metal fencing in a right frantic state. A desperate bid to return to her new herd after being separated from her previous, an equine cry resonating through the area, echoing even as other tolters returned it. While they didn't seem so wild earlier, in these moments it wasn't so hard to believe. This was more along the lines of what people expected when they heard the words 'wild', 'untamed', 'untouched'. They expected fierce rebellion and defiance, a vicious streak more in tune with that of a predator, they expected an unconquerable challenge of a beast. Yet no, as things settled down, a few of the tolters crept towards their audience, curious. That was what defined them, she thought. Their curiosity, and their stubbornness. She'd seen sweethearts, and she'd seen these mean old things, but those two traits were ever present. Tempered by caution and past experience at times, true, but they were curious, and they wanted to learn.

That was what had sealed the deal, so long ago, signing her heart away to these sorts of equines above all others. That was what appealed to the bookworm she was at heart. At first she'd been drawn to the symbolism and history the equines had, the things most of the public knows. The tales of an unyielding will and the freedom they represented. Yet then she met one of these once wild creatures, now tame, and traced the freezebrand on the gelding's neck with a sense of wonder. She watched children pull on his tail, riders come and go, and saw for herself that there was more to it. They weren't just symbols anymore, they were horses. They were gentle giants who'd let her cry on their necks after a hard day. They were powerful creatures who'd lend her their hooves so that she might fly. They were poetry in motion, beauty in life, nature's royalty- they were wonderful. The only difference between an untrained domestic horse, and a wild one, were those two traits.

Curiosity - for they'd never been around humans before, were they helpful or harmful?

and

Stubbornness - there was a reason they were still alive, after all, despite the harsh conditions.

A clamor drew her attention, a sharp squeal ensuring it was held. It was in one of the mare pens, some of the younger ones if she wasn't mistaken. A large chestnut had chased a smaller mare away from the newly delivered hay, fiery orangish ears pinned all the while. Yet is wasn't the more heavyset mare which caught her eye and stole her breath away, but the smaller, daintier one. This mare's coat seemed almost black in the shade, though a few lighter spots hinted at some sort of pattern underneath the caked mud. A long, pale mane and tail were matted in a most unattractive way. Yet the way that tolter moved as she darted away from the larger mare... it was almost like she was dancing. Watching the graceful little mare deal with her tormentor much better than the human child had in her place, said human's heart might as well of melted. Spellbound, it was with magic in mind that she marked off number 3489, despite there having been no enquiries thus far.

That mare was taken.

2) Settling In

3) The Halter

Days had turned into weeks, and weeks very nearly a month, and thus far nothing had gone awry. Magic had gotten used to her presence, and had no issues with having a human in the pasture. The chestnut mare was fine with being touched as well, having learned that no harm would come of it. In fact, the lovely little mare had discovered quite quickly afterwards that she loved the partial grooming sessions. Nothing more than a curry comb, a regular old hairbrush, and two brushes with hard and soft bristles, respectively, but Magic adored it. Trying to tend to her hooves, however, would have to wait. All of this had been introduced in the small pasture, at liberty, where the mare could move away if she felt uncomfortable with anything. The tolter had set the pace throughout everything thus far, but now it was time to introduce the mare to a halter.

For the occasion, a new halter had been bought, which would belong to Magic and Magic alone. A simple, pastel, red to orange gradient, with brass hardware, there was a slight worry that the warm colors and jingling metal would spook the mare. Of course she'd worn some rather vibrant shirts and an occasional necklace over the near month she'd had the mare, but still. There was always something to fret over, yet she couldn't allow such nervous fears to rule her when she was dealing with any equine, nevermind Magic, to whom all of this was new. The mare would pick up on her mood in a heartbeat, and then she'd really have something to worry about. So the emotion was brutally squashed, and she resolved not to let it rear it's head again. Magic would love the halter, just as she adored the sound of grain in her bin, and the sight of the grooming tote her human would carry out each day. Everything would be perfectly fine.

A smile curved at the approaching human's lips, finding the mare waiting for her at the gate. Dark brown ears pricked as the mare noticed not only the grooming tote containing her beloved brushes, occasionally a treat or two, but also the halter slung across the human's shoulder. Nimble fingers soon combed through the tolter's flaxen forelock, dark brown eyes meeting the mare's own burnt sienna shade as a softly spoken greeting was offered. Slipping through the gate was done with little fanfare, and she calmly made her way to the mare's side- Magic having backed away with a wary look towards the hinges as they groaned. Setting the tote on the ground, the mare's attention was once more directed towards her. The fire-toned halter was lifted for inspection, being sniffed at and chewed on as Magic pursued the strange nylon contraption. Once the mare seemed content that it wasn't a threat, the human was soon being poked in the stomach by a curious nose. Why weren't the brushes out already, the mare seemed to ask.

The halter was unclipped, and gently pulled over Magic's muzzle, before being fastened again. Seconds ticked by as the mare's ears swiveled, mouth moving as she licked her lips and chewed on air, considering. An equine head ducked down to rub the nylon against an outstretched leg, poking back up not to long afterwards to gladly accept the offered chunk of banana. Dark whiskers and peach fuzz tickled the human's hand, dark eyes lighting up with relief as the curry comb was plucked from the tote's collection, much to Magic's delight.

4) A Friend

5) Extra: Picture Perfect

WIN_20150812_014008.JPG

6) A Test of Trust

Her back hurt and her arm was cramping, sweat was creeping down the back of her neck, and the sun beat down upon her, relentless. Yet placid, patient eyes never faltered even under the celestial body's fiery glare. Time ticked by, an hour passed, and she remained immobile, only moving when the mare at her side did. Backing up, crowhopping, neither was the right answer, and so the pressure remained. A rope was noosed around one of Magic's forelegs, looping around her barrel and allowing the human to keep the one leg snug against itself. A steady pressure on both sides of her halter, lead rope tied in an imitation of reins specifically for such a purpose, asked the mare to drop her head, and keep it down. That part Magic had already figured out, it was the end result the mare was leery of.

The tobiano tolter groaned, reluctantly leaning back until her knee brushed the ground. She jerked a bit, hesitant, testing. Is this really what you want? Soft words and gentle murmurs reassured her, and Magic settled, knee resting on the ground. A dark nose blew at the loose sand below, nudging it around as she considered. Pressure on her hindquarters asked her to go all the way to the ground, to lie down, to make herself completely vulnerable to attack, to trust the odd human. Trust that nothing would happen to her. Licking, chewing, blowing, ears flicked, unsure. Yet she had been given no reason to distrust the young woman, and every reason to do so... Was it really so much to ask for? Was it really such an impossible leap of faith? With that thought in mind, the mare flopped to the ground with another groan, legs now parallel to the ground.

"Atta girl, atta girl, that's my sweetheart..." A soothing voice crooned, hand pressing against the equine's large head to coax her to remain down. As it became clear the mare wasn't going to pop back up, that hand joined it's mirror in stroking along the nearly obsidian coat. A smile curled at the human's lips, tickled by the progress.

9) First Ride

Trepidation flourished like wildfire within her chest, a pit in her stomach and a lump in her throat. Or, at least, that was the case an hour ago, before she started working with Magic. Now it was only calm determination, tempered with caution. Around and around the showy mare trotted, practically prancing on the end of the lunge line. The saddle had long since become commonplace, the bridle as well. There hadn't been any issues once Magic realized that no, the saddle wasn't going to eat her, but now it was time to step things up a bit. It was time to actually get in the saddle. Exhaling, she called the mare to a stop with a tug upon the line and a glance towards the stunning white on the tolter's hindquarters.

Striding closer to Magic, the line was swiftly unclipped. The mare's ears pricked, watching in curiosity as a boot was slipped into the stirrup. Dark brown met burnt sienna, before the human lifted herself over the saddle, sprawling across Magic's back. Ears flicked, unsure, as an equine head twisted around to investigate. They flattened, then pricked, as she wiggled about on Magic's back. Pleased the mare wasn't about to tear off like hounds were on her heels, a leg was slung over the tolter's hindquarters as she righted herself in the saddle. Minutes ticked by, Magic eventually growing bored with the entire thing. There was a bunch of grass right by the pen's perimeter which seemed to be calling to her with a siren's sweet serenade. Taking a step towards it, the mare froze as the weight on her back shifted. Blinking, ears swiveling, the tobiano tolter licked her lips and chewed on air as she considered. There wasn't any pain, and nothing seemed to be trying to eat her... Gingerly, Magic picked her way closer to the fence, pausing every now and again to check that the human on her back wasn't doing anything suspicious.

When the mare stopped to munch on the flora, the young woman slipped from the saddle, positively beaming.

personality: sassy - friendly - helpful - kind - caring - loving - [used to be] bitter - loyal - hyper - shy - quiet -
short history: Ninjin grew up in a small den in a forest. Months passed and she decided it was time to leave her place of birth, and wanted a fresh, clean slate, living in a new area, to start from scratch. She gathered a few items that she thought would help, and left. She didn't realise how hard it was to search for her new home, as she wanted everything to be perfect, and all the places she went past weren't what she had in mind for her little paradise. After travelling for a few weeks and not finding a place to settle, she began to become inpatient and bitter. Her once friendly attitude turned into venom as she felt like she was being hit in the face, for she had left her home in search for a new place to call paradise, and suddenly realised, she already had left paradise. She was just too judging and wanted everything perfect to realise that her birth-place was perfect for her. She already knew everything about it; where the best hunting/foraging places were, where the comfiest moss was. Ninjin decided to travel back. She then reached her home, and realised paradise was here.
